Last night I was only going to stop by Satin Dolls to have a drink with the lady I took the first night. I somehow changed it to I will take her again. The United States invaded the Dominican Republic in the 1965 and Haiti did it years before.

Unless I didt understnd the English, the police came after a member who made an illegal U-turn on a major street (Gomez).

I don't deny the police try to take advantage of foreigners. The best advice is to be extra careful to avoid the police and doing anythig to attract attention.

Jao pointed to the cops and said watch, they are going to pull me over because I'm a white gringo. He didn't do anything wrong and they started to chase us. But it must have taken time for them to hop on the scooter and start to follow us. We had to make a you-turn because of the concrete dividers. We made the U-turn which put on on the opposite side of the cops, which had a concrete divider between us. I guess they decided they won't catch us if they drove more and made a you-turn like we did. The cop on the back of the scooter jumped off the scooter and jumped over the concrete divider to try to block us, he has his big flashlight and waving it at us. Jao likes to drive with the windows down. For a reason I don't know why. Haha and Jao said a quick word to the cop and we kept going. Jao didn't do anything wrong for the cops to start chasing us. I think the rent a car he has looks like the 1, 000's of other rent a cars there, so when a cop sees the new Nissan or Toyota car it would be noticeable that it is probably a rent a car, and I would guess most rent a cars are rented from foreigners.

I saw a man take a lady which looked like she could have been a night worker in to the elevator of the Hotel Jao stays at and the security didn't say anything. So I'm not sure why his hotel checks some ladies and not others. He said they didn't stop his light skinned guests, but stopped his dark skinned guests.

We left and I saw 2 men walk in, the first two looked like your average medium skinned locals, they didn't get searched. The guy walking in behind him looked like your average black man. He got stopped and searched by the security. It seemed like he was friends with the other 2 locals, but his friends didn't get searched, but the black guy did. So, I would definitely say there is some racism going on there.

I did Exactly that with that Sabor in the car (I met Sabor 6 days prior to meeting Gagoo) and Sabor said: "what is wrong with you? Just make a "U-turn". I said nope, I don't want to give the PN any excuse to pull me over. (total retardation that a major hotel doesn't have an entrance from the southbound lane of a major street).

I was going to make the left turn and loop around back to Maximo Gomez when I was with Gagoo, but I saw the Policia Nacional were already behind me, before I got to the place where I could make a left or a "you-turn", so I was forced to break the law in order not to be robbed by the policia nacional. If I made the left, those side streets are dark and deserted late at night, perfect spot for the policia nacional to rob me.

I know a Dominican in government who told me that is permissible to go through a red light late at night and disobey other traffic laws, as a safety concern, to prevent from being robbed. Plenty of Dominicans go through red lights late at night.

ISG Knowledge continues to be in denial and continues to want to defend the indefensible. Assuming the "U-turn" I made on Maximo Gomez was illegal, why didn't the Policia Nacional follow me into the Hotel Parking lot, to arrest me. I have seen the Polica Nacional enter the Hotel Barcelo parking lot before, when they want to take a nap (Yes to sleep, they drove into the parking lot and drove to a quiet area of parking lot to the side and rear where they could sleep). Based on this and other forum posts I have read over the last years you are more likely to be stopped by PN members than most people. White people have complained more about being target of PN or AMET than people from other racial categories. Unprofessional PN accounts for 40% of all Dominican Republic firearms deaths so we always should be careful with PN.

I never keep money in my wallet, I have gone to the Dominican consulate in NYC to complain about them before to no avail, but what I did do is take a handful of business cards from the consulate and when I'm stopped I show my license with the business cards and explain that some family member works there. I also have NYC police I'd (My father is retired and I look just like him) when I demonstrate those things I get off all the time with out any fuss or hassle.

I think the business cards would work on their own.

I also turn the light on in the car with my wallet up in plain view to show them I don't have any money. I don't even question what I did wrong, I just come straight out and tell them I have no money to pay for their propinas o regalos.

My worst luck is always on Gomez, I don't know why that is a hot spot for those crooks.

i think many airport rental vehicles stick out like a sore thumb in santo domingo. some people used to laugh at me because i never wash my rental, but new glossy cars call out attention in a city full of dented cars. i avoid driving thru touristy areas and stay in small hotels or apartments. when i p4p i rather keep a low profile and be respectful to authorities, specially if they act like professionals. they will most likely ask for money, everyone does that in the dr when you are a foreigner. i have been ripped off by taxi drivers and beach vendors. i have been lied to by greedy hoes. i have had several traffic incidents and not one was my fault. it is what it is, every third world country has its primitive aspects. when i come here i get a sense of freedom i don't have in the us. i can get my dick wet whenever i feel like without being arrested, i can drink a beer on the beach and drive away without fear, i drive around the country without being worried about my speedometer, i go out alone at night knowing nobody will pick a fight with me just because i look different or am not from there. when shit gets stressful in the capital i travel far away for a few days and return refreshed. if i could change one thing in that city it would be to remove all publico drivers from the face of the earth. the pn to me seemed tolerable.

i hope jao returns to dr and has better luck next trip. many people have benefited from his guidance, including myself. however, if you decide to partake the manizales option, i want in as well, lol.

Truly sorry to hear this story, Jao. Just thinking, would it be better off if you just used a Taxi instead of driving a rental car. Is it cost prohibitive? Sure you could work it out since you are so familiar with the place.

I have driven little bit in DR and since I blend in well and can pass for a Dominincan, haven't had any issues. So far. But again if something does happen I could be in deep shit as I speak almost no espanol and don't carry a cell phone when I am there.
