My personal thoughts are that it has little to do with what time you approach them but more to do with them feeling comfortable with you. Are you a guy who goes to the termas and only hangs out with them or are you a guy who goes for all the girls? You will have a better chance if she feels you are really into her. However, never underestimate her other options for where she is going to sleep. They are an important factor. Also important is your reputation in the termas (as well as others. GDP. NET is alive and well) , your reputation as a lover and the quality of your accommodations.

Development of a reputation in a termas is most likely a big investment since it requires multiple visits. Having met you and your (quite impressive!; termas body, lady-like charm, seemingly libertine) non-pro gf, I know that are knowledgeable about the greater scene outside P4P and can advise us on other options. If you didn't have her, and if you spoke only intermediate Porto like Pimsleur III, then what would be your strategy for finding freebies? You can easily cab it there (recommended for first-timers) or walk (if you are up for a little risk late at night). The metro is your ticket to Centro termas and prives, those in Tijuca, and places in between (like Ju Pantera in Flamengo?). Also easy access to General Osorio in Ipanema.
Bottom line: don't stress about being close to Balcony, find a place you like within reasonable walk of Metro.

It's now a family restaurant, more or less. If it's your 1st time and the left-over girls find out they will try and over charge you. Emilio, I recommend that if you have sufficient budget, stay in Ipanema and take cabs where you need to go. Focus on the termas to start and then move on to Balcony once you get a couple days experience.
