Hey all,
I'm planning a trip to the DR for mid or end of october. Wondering if any fellow hobbyists are also planning a trip during that time. Plan to stay at Blackbeard's - but intend to check out Sosua and POP.
Looking forward to meeting other cool people.

I have been to Barba Negra 4 times and have taken hundreds of photos there. It has been 2 years exactly since my last trip to Blackbeards and I have to say that some things have changed, mostly for the best. If you are looking for a no hastle fun time with reasonable prices, there are not many places I could imagine that would beat Blackbeards.
Location, Location, Location, different members have different feelings about the location of Blackbeards. Located out on the point of Costambar, Blackbeards is in a gated small mixed area of expat homes and local homes as well. It is about 5min to Puerto Plata and about 20min from Sosua. I find the location quiet and remote which in my opinion is much more pleasant than the chaos of other cities. Additionally, the area that the resort is located in is getting better. I took a drive through the neighborhood and found no less than 6 restaurants in short walking distance and another 12 within a 30min walk. I also went out in Puerto Plata and sampled a few restaurants and was also impressed. That said, there are those that prefer Sosua, to each his own.
I was in town for 3 days on business, and for some reason found myslf only taking one chica. Which brings me to my next point which is that the Hotel value alone is worth the trip to Blackbeards. Talking with several mongers there, all thought the same thing. At least 4 of them went to Sosua the day I arrived and I saw them one night later, all were back at Blackbeards for the simple reason that it was the best place to stay. The rooms are spotless and the staff will truely try to make your trip a great one. The food has improved and is quite nice. For $45 per night you can not beat this place.
Chicas this time had a much better attitude, and I found out why. While I was there they had a reunion with old staff members and had the guys put in their votes on who should stay and who should go. They let go 8 chicas that were less than perfect in customer satisfaction. Attitude gors a long way and the skills of these girls are top notch. The only drawback in my opinion is that the girls of Puerto Plata do not hold up to their sisters of Santiago and their cousins in other Latin nations. But with 40+ to pick from and great attitudes, this place is done right.
The last thing that was different this time (luck of the draw?) was also the fun times and good conversations with the fellow mongers at Blackbeard's. They tell me that like myself, 70% of their clients come from the northeast, but I had good conversations with a Brit, a Dutchman and 2 Canadians.

you nailed it on the head. i couldn't agree with you more. i was at bbs for 8 days at the end of may. besides the expected fun with the chicas there, i met some other visitors with whom i am returning to bbs on nov 10-19. the guys i met there were all ready to laugh, share experiences and party.
sure, we will go out again to pp and to sosua / cabarete for day trips, but returning home to the peace and quiet of costumbar is essential for an old guy (47) like me. the bars, massage parlors and discos of sosua should be at least sampled if possible, and sosua beach is the place to go to meet chicas during the day. cabarete has an awesome beach and a great [url=http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord117][CodeWord117][/url] scene. it also has some terrific restaurants and bars right on the beach. it is a perfect place to go with a group of friends or with a local girl on a day date.
in my opinion, staying in sosua (at least at all the girl-friendly hotels that i have seen) is too hectic. the hotel rooms and beds are not what i am comfortable with. the nights i stayed there were fun --a real frat party type of fun-- but that grows tired very quickly for me. i want to chill.
so, if anyone is thinking of heading down to bbs during the time i am, i'd look forward to meeting with you. just look for pat (me), walter, brian, keith and a few others. be happy to have a couple of beers with you and to knock around the area.
Hello everyone. After reading this forum for several weeks, I decided to join in the convo because every report I read is soo accurate. I was just at BB's the last week of April of this year and will be returning in November. One of my buddies always talk about Sousa which I found to be an exciting little town but BB's is way more laid back and relaxed. I really enjoyed the activities around Costambar and I even had fun at their karaoke night. I've been to many places around the world but that was my favorite vacation hands down. The jacuzzi was ridiculous as me and 4 of my buddies were accompanied by 10 beautiful chicas, presidente beers and cigars in hand, then off to the room. I'm counting down the days to go back......42 today and counting .....
Can anyone tell me anything about renting a villa in DR? Would that be wise? Or stick with BB?

If the location and action at BB's made you happy, i would advise returning their. Obviously you are a very unexperienced monger with very little travel background, and no spanish speaking skills. And you appeared to be happy with the quality of girls at Blue Balls, so apparently you are not "picky at all, as the quality there is very low. When you get more experienced, and you raise your standards on quality, then venture off to renting a villa. In short, Blue Balls is entry level, has a lousy location (laid back as you put it), and designed for beginners who need to be spoon fed. The good news is, your experiences can only improve, once you take off your training wheels and move on.

Not sure if this is the same "Fantasy" from TSM days but I'll give a fellow Senior Member the benefit of the doubt. Totally agree with you about 1) The quality of the chicas 2) The pristine nature of the Jacuzzi. You could not find me in that breading ground of possible contamination at any time, although I am sure they try and keep it clean, a few of the guys I spoke with while at BB's had gotten mildly sick because of possibly ingesting some of the water in from the Jacuzzi. So keep that in mind. As for the quality of the girls, I have to admit while the "Attitude" of the girls has made a huge improvement, the quality (as stated in my report) is not what you would find at other locations in the country (Santiago etc..) or in any of my other favorite countries (Columbia, Cuba, Argentina)... but with 40+ on tap you still get a variety to choose from. As stated before to each his own, I spent the majority of my time in Santiago on this trip and did most of my mongering there. Since I do the majority of my business in Central and South America I think you will find that my Spanish is as good as any non native speaker on this board. But then again, I would estimate that 95% of the guys on this board have little or no understanding of the language and are fine with it that way. Of the 20 or so guys I met at BB's myself and 2 others from NYC were the only ones who could hold a conversation in Spanish. As stated before, if you have the language, then you have other options. The other thing of note is that the average age of the clients of BB's was about 50yo when I was there. I'm 36 and the two other spanish speaking guys from NYC were also in their 30's. So BB's is great at exactly what it is aimed for. A no hastle, cheap good time for guys from the States, North America and Europe. Are there better low mileage chicas in Sosua or Santiago? Sure, but the simple fact is that while you and I may have been the guys traveling to the DR and Cuba in the early - mid 90's doing our own research and joining small groups like TSM, creating the basis of what is now the ISG's forums, these "newbies" were still unaware and not using the Internet. Point being that I am reflecting my posts to educate the masses, the 40 & 50 somthing, gringos with no experience, no language skills etc. Everyone has to start somewhere and nothing I can say will add to the knowlege that Ford, Surfer, Frequent Flier or any of the other senior posters have said so far.
