It should definitely be mentioned that there are many cases of counterfeit Bolivares being sold to unsuspecting foreigners. Be careful who you change your money with.

I was warned about this by the locals. Once I settled in though, my hosts were able to get me a better than avergage exchange rate without any worries about the money being bad.

I read the law and you can't be imprisioned unless you're exchanging thousands of dollars. That's why I posted that the fine is 2 times the amount of the transaction.

There's a link off the Universal page for both the law itself and a FAQ.

Does anyone happen to know how the law has affected the black market rate ie is it higher or lower than it was before the law went into effect.

besides all the hassle you need to go through to change $$$ or Euros I have heard and read on some Dutch and German boards about Isla Margarita that there is a lot of SCAMS with ATM's too. Peope couldn't get money out....but after getting home they saw that money was off there bancaccount! Or in some worse cases the ATM just took their card in for some reason. Also on Margarita Island lots of criminals like to rob you when being at an ATM.

These (and some more) were the reasons NOT to go to Venezuela and I went to the DR for my last trip.

I never regreted that choice.

Need some help on finding a hotel. Hotel Paseo Las Mercedes has gotten good reviews but does anyone know the price? I've seen $68 posted on this board but their website indicates $100. What's the deal? Does their website show gringo prices? Should I call them directly? Can anyone recommend anything else? PLEASE HELP!

Me and my buddies are going to Venezuela in a couple of months from now, I'm really lookig forward to the trip.

I've read all 41 pages of the Caracas reports on the WSG (I know, I need to get a life) and theres been some real good info on many posts.

It seems to me that Ave. Casanova has got alot of sex action along that street. Can anyone tell me what to expect there (SWs, bars, niteclubs, love hotels)? And is it safe at night?

I had no problem with ATMS in Caracas.

Disregard postings from people who have never visited Venezuela.

Only issue with ATMS is Bolivar is so week it takes multiple withdrawals to get out a couple hundred bucks.

I thought the chicas win Venezuela were super hot. Definitely hit a Samba club the chicas love to dance!

Heading to Caracas very soon, I need to know what are the best clubs in the city. I want smoking hot exotic chicks only. Price is not a object, but I want only prime girls that give awesome action.

You may have forgotten to disclose that the exchange rate given at ATMs is the "official" rate, so anyone following your advice will get very little money for their dollars.

Best thing is to bring cash in Venezuela and exchange it in Caracas.
There is a great difference from the oficial rate. It is also not advisable to use a credit card.

Last february we got much lesser exhange rates at Purto la Cruz and Isla Margarita.

So, plan ahead your expenses.

Try hotel Avila in San Bernardino area. Old hotel but in a fantastic location, you can have breakfast by the pool, spacious rooms, satellite tv, 60 US breakfast included, girl friendly.

I am going to stay there myself between Dec 3rd and 6th for an update on the Caracas mongering scene.

I was so desperate that I stopped by the "La Fantasia" and gladly paid the 220,000 Bs for a bottle of champagne, a room and a girl.

Thanks for taking the time to compile this info. I don't know where Morrison is located but it's not in Sabana Grande nor on Casanova. BTW Las Acacias is also known as Calle de los Hoteles. I see you have included Saxo twice. It is located in Sabana Grande off Casanova not on Casanova.
