So, it was Saturday night, when all of Davao seems to shake off the lethargy of the week gone by and spring to life, when the Slayer calls and tells me that he's flying in during the early evening from Cebu, and I arrange to meet him at the airport with my wife, which I do. We then make a brief stopover at his hotel, and go hurrying off to Claude's, where we've booked a table. Booking a table at Cafe de Ville is necessary on the week-ends as the place is small, very popular, and gets full early, and stays full throughout most of the evening.

The Slayer and I each had a Canard a l'Orange, which, as I've said before, is superb, and all the more so because Davao is such an unlikely place to find French duck with orange sauce. Two bottles of excellent French red (a Chirouble and a Morgan), and we're all pretty well satisfied with our meal. I've written several times about Claude's (Cafe de Ville) and there's nothing much to add except that it's certainly the best "dining" experience in Davao. The wait staff is very well trained, unobtrusive and pleasant, and Claude, a typical, extroverted French restaurant host. It's expensive by Davao standards, extraordinarily reasonable by Western standards and excellent by any standard.

From Claude's it was but a short walk to Henny's for a coffee and, as usual, several people whom we--DS, my wife and I--all know pretty well. It was, as it usually is, extremely pleasant to sit outside in idle conversation, with a reasonably large group of people. Of course, being outside, we had an excellent view of the terrace eating area at Someplace Else. As typical on a night where there's no rain, the place was packed with youngish people. For the more adventurous among you, this would be an excellent venue to try your luck, assuming that there's no rain. I'm always at Henny's with my wife and so I've never even considered seriously the thought of trying to pick up any one of the couple of dozen or so attractive young women, so I've got no empirical evidence that they're available. However, this is the Philippines.

I am still in Davao. I heard from both Ivy, 21 and Shiela, 19 of my "Three Some in Cebu". Thanks for the report, which was both funny and, at least as far as I'm concerned, accurate. I've been in Manila for the past 24 hours or so, having gotten in last night after nine on a flight from Davao. Again staying at the Dusit, which is my hotel of choice here. I made a quick trip to Ermita last night, and it was the same old scene with nothing new and/or exciting to report.

The Italian restaurant owned by the Swiss Baker and Deli guys in Gaisano is romantic with the view and all but poolside at Marco Polo's new restaurant would probably be the best.

I confer with DS that Apo isn't that great, lots of lady boys waiting to prey on you to boot. The jazz bar Blue Room is a romantic intimate spot to impress a date cuz chances are she has never been there.

Now a wonderfull day trip is a beach outing to Paradise. If you have half day then just near the Waterfront Insular is several smaller compounds where you can use the swimming facilities and restaurants. I did both. They are both more romantic than the beaches on the other side of town but hanging out at the Seagull resort on the beach was a romantic spot too. Seagull has a mountain resort too but the length of the journey was less than romantic for me unless I hired a limo and the lady wasn't shy.

Now for those on the cheap, nothing beats Peoples Park Davao. A great place for a romantic one hour tour. It is first rate.

The only hotel I recommend to mongers who want to be close to all the action in Davao is Royal Mandalay and Marco Polo. The other hotels mentioned here Gallera, Casa Letica etc. Just don't seem to be worth the extra money you would need to spend to get into the RM or MP. Grand Regal is fine but a bit far out with exception to some nice romantic spots out that way. Paradise, waterfront insular, one of the newest and largest KTV bar in Davao a walking distance away.

I was also impressed with Microtel. Close to Swiss baker and that indian restaurant-LOL but the hotel and location lacks romance.

RM and MP have that. They are right next to Peoples Park and if you don't get lucky there you are next to Hot Legs.

Red Knight is a bit worn but the grounds are nice, the neighborhood is clean, and its perfect for those seeking some solitude with a gf- it is romantic, plus there is good availability compared to other serviced apartments in Davao.

Enough talk of romance, but it does help with Filipinas who unlike any other Asian race I been pumping enjoy a little chat and snuggle in a romantic place and who are not all out for a quick buck. Maybe its a bit of supply and demand here but what the heck who we fooling anyways.

I do not agree with a couple of Tout's recommendations. The Micro Hotel, which is in Damosa Gate Center off of Lanang, is part of an American chain and reminds me of a Motel 6. It's got zero amenities and it's price, at about Php2, 100 is ridiculous for what you get. It has no restaurant, no bar, no ambiance, no charm, and no style. For the same or less money, you could stay at Casa Leticia, which is much nicer with a better location. I also don't agree with the Royal Mandaya, which is sorely in need of maintenance and renovation. It's got a great location, but its torn carpets, musty smell and dim interior make it, for me, a place to avoid. Again, for the same or less money, you could stay in Casa Leticia which is just down the street, and it's much more lively and better maintained.

Having discussed the choice of hotels at some length with DS, I tend to agree with him. Either stay low budget, at a place like Casa Ruby, Red Knight, or any one of ten or twelve others, or stay at the Marco Polo and enjoy the luxuries that it has to offer. I'm not sure that any of the other "in between" hotels are worth it. I had never been inside one of the guest rooms at the Apo View until DS took a two-room suite there for a couple of nights. On the plus side, the suite was well furnished, clean and extremely attractive, with ornate wood furniture covered in some sort of Chinese fabric. On the other hand, the walk to the elevators is extremely long; the service was definitely intrusive, sporadic, and somewhat annoying, and the lobby and amenities do not compare with the Marco Polo. (The restaurant off the lobby however looked pretty nice and I'll probably try it eventually.)

I agree with the comments about the Blue Room, which is my favorite bar in Davao. It's been remodeled very tastefully; the liquor is top shelf; the prices are not bad and the live music is always enthusiastic and sometimes quite good depending on the band playing on any given evening. Also, it does not attract the street crowd which, to me, is a definite plus.

The beach at the Waterfront is, I agree, a nice place, but the hotel itself leaves a lot to be desired. It's probably the most attractive property in Davao, with the beach front location and large, sweeping lawns. Like so much else here however, no one has spent any money on maintaining the place, and it's somewhat seedy. I would never recommend it to anyone as a hotel of choice.
