I find Shenzhen to be a real dump. Not so cheap any more, English language a problem, etc etc.

Macao a much better option for a non-Chinese who wants a quick trip from HK.

If you have a few days, and don't mind flying, try Hangzhou. A group of my friends went there last November for a stag weekend and had a blast.

There is no quick deal there: you need the passport pix, application, and all. An expedited service of a few days might be possible at the consulate, but at an extra cost. Also, for US citizens at least, the visa is multiple-entry for a year (about USD 100-125 with two or three weeks processing, but my experience was from the US; perhaps it is quicker in HK).
