This information is posted on the Rio forum because Tam and other aircarriers have cheap flights from Rio to Asuncion.

It's a great way to take a week detour and unleash your inner phuck-crazy-bonanza person, and go completely bananas until you are absolutley dry of milk.

A warning thou: Returning back to Rio / Buenos Aires might be a bit dissapointing, as the prices, as the good GFE on most occations, as *most* girls (70-80%) offers anal for no surcharge. Add the "No tipping expected" (Doorman tipping never heard of!) , and most casas open 24 hours (Sundays exception) , and at such a low cost that makes it hard to spend money.

This is a nice, juicy 300 gram steak, with mashed garlic potato, freshly squized orangejuice, garlic butter and a basket of different breads at a good restaurant. Price? Less than what you pay for a standard meal at Mc'Donald's in Brazil.. You go figure the rest.

Asuncion sounds like fun.

It seems like the girls cost 120-150'000 guarani/hour. That's more or less R$50-60. In Rio that money would give you 30-40 minutes in a decent privê. Meaning that Asuncion is slightly cheaper.

One thing against Paraguay is that it is very small, the country has like 6 million people, about half the size of Greater Rio de Janeiro. Hence, the variety is kind of limited. I personally could not stay anywhere in Paraguay for more than a few days, it is very bland IMHO. If you enjoy good luck to you, but I think most people would probably prefer a more lively destination. Thanks for the info though.

[/QUOTE]I work in the airline industry and know for a fact that Brazilians in the US are flying home a lot! When I check the weekly loads sometimes I go straight to O Dia or Globo to see if something is going on in Brazil that is causing the mass movement. I think they are just taking advantage of the early low coach fares and buy them months in advance.

Now as for the mergers hurting competition, that's a regional issue, and I can only speak for United and Continental. United has absolutely NO PLANS to give up its Chicago or Washington Dulles routes to Brazil and Continental from Houston and Newark. Matter of fact we started using each others planes to better optimize the routes. Code sharing is an airline method to gain more routes and passengers in another country. United years ago applied for and got the LAX to GRU route which they used along with the MIA and JFK routes to get Varig to join the Star Alliance. Now those routes were given to TAM who is an alliance member also. When we are dealing with different countries and national carriers its easier to gain access by aligning together. UA or CO just cannot jump up tomorrow and fly to Brasilia or Bahia because they are US carriers. If the Brazilian Goverment approves the flights, then they will want the same number of US cities approved for TAM also. So with CO and UA keeping their routes, all other US carriers still will keep theirs also because they serve different communities and regions. US and Brazilian carriers will now have greater access and streamlined approval due to the Open Skies Agreement that Obama and Dilma just signed. So by World Cup and Olympics, US carriers will have more flights to different cities in Brazil, same thing for TAM in the US.

I thought they canceled that 10PM flight like 2 years ago. I thought you had to fly to Houston first and then connect to Rio! I ABSOLUTELY HATE DOING THAT! It kills two extra vacation days for me because the flight to Houston is at 3in the afternoon and the return flight you arrive in NJ at around 11AM. I loved catching the 10Pm flight out of NJ going down and returning at 6AM coming back.

I believe the Newark flight goes to São Paulo; you then change planes to a plane from Houston which is on its way to Rio. The return flight is presumably the reverse of this itinerary.

In theory you could still fly ewr gru on continental and then pick up a Tam fright gru gig but I have never seen them present a good schedule or price for that.

Best flight now from Ny is American or Tam direct from JFK GIG.
