When it comes to ones impression of hotels often its room dependent so its hard to judge a hotel from the few available rooms one sees - and when it comes to RM and MP CL they are in high demand so there are few available rooms to be seen when I dropped by.

In fact I did see a room at CL the few times I dropped by it is good but didn't overwhelm me. The Presidential suite was under renovation as I had wanted to be in the room DS made famous.

I must reiterate however that the room I saw at RM Building 2 (the newer one) was really impressive for the price @2200p . Be your own judge.

As to the Microtel what impresses me is the newness, cleanliness of the room and the big spring mattress, not the location, the price or the atmosphere as I had previously stated it sucks.

Bottom line you need to spend 2200pesos plus to get a decent hotel and you must must must book in advance. MP is truly a class hotel.

If your budget is like 1200 pesos a night and you don't like to book in advance be prepared to rough it up a bit. There are very few gems if you want to be close to the street action without taking a cab such as - Casa Amigos - noisy, Hotel Galleria - older but maybe better. They are also fully booked and you will be waiting a few days to get in on average without reservations.

I spend the entire month i was in Davao at a dumpy motel because I refuse to pay more than 1200p a night in the Phil. It had only one good room. The hotel had invested in a new spring mattress, had hot water, big size room, with natural sunlight and good AC. I can't recommend the motel because chances are that the room you get wouldn't be available and the most of the other rooms suck. I paid about 1000 p and had a free breakfast. The room was worth about 700p in my view.

Now to the story, that location resulted in one very fine sexy young filipina probably the best non-pro on the trip i was taking back to bed go into a fit when we were about to disembark from the taxi. She felt uncomfortable with the surrounding street scene and wasn't going to be seen going in there - yes my choice of hotel did me in. We drove to a restaurant had a bite to decompress and she left me never to return a text.

Hell, maybe the sex wasn't gong to be good - so an important factor one must consider in the mongering experience is your choice of hotels. Davao seriously lacks in this regard; but remember its the Phil you can manage and I did.

I stayed in some budget hotels in my younger days (early 20s) and when I first began going to Thailand and the Philippines 20 years ago. You do need a Hotel with security, a safe for your money and valuables (passport, watches, credit cards). Here you will have anything stolen if you leave it unattended anywhere for even a minute. I once placed my cellphone on the table in front of me at the little Cafe in front of the Crowne Regency Hotel in Cebu. I had no problems with the room, but was unhappy how the pool was managed. They have a pool, Casa Leticia doesn't.

I won't recommend Mandaya, but I didn't experience what GE has posted earlier. His experience may ge out of date.

On the other hand, the walk to the elevators is extremely long; the service was definitely intrusive, sporadic, and somewhat annoying, and the lobby and amenities do not compare with the Marco Polo. (The restaurant off the lobby however looked pretty nice and I'll probably try it eventually.)

I agree with the comments about the Blue Room, which is my favorite bar in Davao. It's been remodeled very tastefully; the liquor is top shelf; the prices are not bad and the live music is always enthusiastic and sometimes quite good depending on the band playing on any given evening. Also, it does not attract the street crowd which, to me, is a definite plus.

The beach at the Waterfront is, I agree, a nice place, but the hotel itself leaves a lot to be desired. It's probably the most attractive property in Davao, with the beach front location and large, sweeping lawns. Like so much else here however, no one has spent any money on maintaining the place, and it's somewhat seedy. I would never recommend it to anyone as a hotel of choice.

A few comments on the State of Davao City. O'Flangan's Pub is gone. A pawn shop is due to open there soon. It will be missed.

Ground Zero has added an outdoor grill by the tree where I would lean back as I drank my beer and checked out the ladies. SM is just breaking ground for a new mall (on the old Lanang gold course) and so is Robinson's in the same area. Ayala is building a new Ayala Center, that will be similar to Greenbelt in Manila, on a 9.2 hectare site also in Lanang. Not only is Davao fairly booming with new investment, but Lanang is clearly becoming a new commercial center that may soon outstrip the traditional center of town for bars, restaurants, stores and late night excitement.

The Wine Cellar at Swiss Deli is downstairs. Marco,the one owner, will never show you whre it is unless you speak fluent German. Worst host of a restaurant I have ever met.You need to ask one of the waitresses there to show you or his partne, Romano.

GoodEnough had me join him for lunch at the Hola Restaurant. It is not nearlys good as Swiss Deli.The daywe were there the service was pretty terrible also. I thought the wine selection was okay for Italy Spain and Chile. Not muchfor France and nothing from No California. The outside tables are good during the Noon lunch hour for meeting women working in the area.

The prices range from about Php550 to Php15,000+, so the range of quality is pretty broad. I've bought a couple of very nice Bordeaux there recently for about Php750-Php800, and they got some decent 2003 Borollos for about $45. The problem at Hola Espana, aside from the fact that the food absolutely sucks, is that no one knows anything about wines. In Swiss Deli, however, Romano knows about every bottle he sells and he will not try to hustle you. I think the last time DS and I were in the cellar, we had a nice raclette with a mid-priced Italian red, and the whole thing was delicious.

The guy who supplies Swiss Deli is a Dutch-born distributor, also extremely knowledgeable, and he makes sure to keep the place supplied with a nicely varied selection.

Don't sweat the real world-ISG connection. I understand completely, and I get somewhat wary as well. Most of the guys however, who will participate in the club are not from ISG (pretty sure that DS and I will be the sole representatives), have never heard of ISG and would not care in any case. In fact, most of the participants are solid middle class expat types who work here in varying capacities.
