I had last visited Shanghai in feb 2011. Experience.

1) First night, I got to Manhattan early and there was nobody there. So went the Blue sky bar just near by and hung out with two girls both nice, bought them a few drinks and chatted with them. I was scammed out of 390 RMB back in 2006 (by a shopkeeper at the Guilin airport, not at an MP) , it was a set-up as I was purposely held up to the point that if I didn't sign the fake credit charge, I would miss my flight. I called the police over but it turns out that the police were in on the scam.

This happened right after the exchange rate had switched from $1 = 8.1 RMB to somewhere in the mid-6's, so I was charged over $60 USA on my credit card statement that arrived once I got back home. I appealed the charge, with detailed explanation of how it was a con, and was told "sorry we can't do anything because it's in China."

I feel bad to keep reading about the Nanjing Lu (Nanjing Road) scams. I was in Shanghai in March 2012 and wrote some detailed posts here about these scams (luckily I was not scammed last year); my posts then generated a flurry of stories about this scam. Unfortunately a newbie could RTFF and might still miss these posts. Maybe we should petition Jackson to open a new thread entitled "Shanghai. The Nanjing Lu MP Scam"?

Gentleman. There are many Mps that are clean, don't smell.

The JC Mandarin is the hotel across from the Portman Center. It has had that name for at least 5 years. There is a bar downstairs and upstairs but I don't recall one being in the lobby. However, WGs sometimes hang out in the lobby on a weekend night. The bar downstairs is a KTV. I have never been inside so I can't comment on it.

The hotel is girl friendly. But if you are concerned and returning late at night, you can go in via the back entrance near the cash machine and take the escalator right up to the second floor. From there, you can take the elevator to your room. You should also note that many hotels ask for IDs for WG to protect the guest from having things taken from your room.

Just another caution. When you walk outside of the JC there will be touts offering girls for massage. These are ALL rip-offs so ignore them. To get rid of them, say "Bu yao" which is Chinese for I don't want. They will usually leave you alone after that.
