Always better to ask up front
If you are concerned with the joint padding the bill, why not just pay for each round as you get it. It may be a little more inconvenient, but it sure beats paying over the odds for drinks you don't get or didn't order.
I realise that this is a little obvious, but sometimes it needs to be reminded. I totally enjoyed my time at the end of last year in Bangkok and Pattaya but always kept a close eye on the tabs and paid as I went. Admittedly a bit more difficult when you're pissed and horny . . .
Just my 2c

Before the food, beverage or service is served/rendered get a price. These people will demand 700bht on the bill in the end for a plate of stir fried vegetables you asked to accompany the 300bht red snapper you just got weighed&priced out of the tank. I had them once try to charge me the equiv of $20USD for a manicure for the pooying du jour on the beach at jomtien because I did not ask up front. I paid for the vegtables but not the manicure. Offered them 200 bht or nothing and there were no cops around so I skated for NOTHING. NEVER EAT ON SUK, because a fancy restauant is cheaper and the hoze and street rif raf will work you. The ho will order a 300bht bacardi cooler and you will end up with a $30USD bill for a shit meal and a couple of drinks. Better to ditch the gash and eat at Foodland alone. NEVER CLOSE A CAB DOOR, unless you know the driver can sah-peak angrit and acknowleges he knows where you want go go and the meter is running.
HOWEVER, if the dude is on the level, I will pay double fare sometimes if it is a long ride in traffic (usually the case). The deaf aholes selling phony art on suk will point to their mouths for food after you buy art. I point at my groin while smiling and nodding. These people look at generosity as a weakness.
Seek and yee shall find...
Every Farang I've seen get beat up by a Thai in Thailand always provoked it!
That's the key to all of this. You really have to go looking for trouble in Thailand to find it! Of course, the dodgy places in TH tend to attract dodgy people (Thai and farang).
I've traveled all over Thailand the past few years and never had a problem with anyone. Occasionally, in tourist areas I get a little frustrated with touts, but I just remind myself they're only trying to make a baht and ignore them. And, when I drink in bars, due to years of practice, I don't become obnoxious.
Ever think that there are idiots out there (in TH) that provoke trouble just to capture it on video to post on YouTube? Never underestimate the *******es of the world.
