All the highlights on your first trip?
i´ve noticed quite a few people planning a first trip to rio and naturally wanting to do all the highlights. while the information is on the forum, you have to search through a lot of non-michelin stuff to find it. so by way of a re-cap in case it´s of help, here´s a possible ´lightning tour´.
1st day. if you´re staying in copacabana, you will probably just want to soak up the (over-priced but) very user-friendly ladies at help, the bar outside help and, further towards the leme end of copacabana, balcony.
2nd day. after help, the single biggest monger wonder-of-the-world for many people is 4x4. some prefer other high class termas, but for sheer impact i think 4x4 maybe gets the gold star. not knowing your way around, you probably take a (daytime) taxi into centro and get him to drop you at 4x4 (quatro por quatro). for less than you spend on a help girl, you get a selection of beauties and quite good service. after taking your time there (remember to explore the club with its many stairwells) you have an hour or 40 minutes with the beauty of your choice and take your leave before it gets dark.
taking a right as you come out of 4x4, you follow the narrow street (buenos aires). you cross the main highway (rio branco) and continue along less than 100 yards to ba85, a dirty opening in between the shops on your left. you ignore the broken elevator and the guy at the entrance and go up the tiny spiral staircase. on each floor is a bar (with cheap drinks) and a range of girls, all at about a tenth of what you paid in 4x4. you ignore the uglies, maybe take a hidden gem if you are ready for a second shot, or just store the info for your next visit.
coming out of ba85 you turn left and continue along the narrow street. you might look in at ba113 just to compare, though that is generally a bit off-putting.
soon you come to a bustling market. opposite, and slightly to your right, is a metro sign for uruguiana station. familiarise yourself with this bit as most people come to buenos aires by metro. if you know the area you won´t get thrown as you come up from the underground railway. this market and the area just beyond is also ok for buying cheap teashirts and any other stuff you want without paying copa prices.
after you´ve done your stuff here, make a left from coming out of buenos airies. you are now going along a largely pedestrianised area called rua uruguiana. you´ll see street magicians and comedians performing here. just before the end of the street, look for a news stand on your left. directly behind the news stand is the entrance to ba´s nearest competitor, uruguiana 24. same deal, 1r a minute on all floors or thereabouts, but the stairs are wide enough to pass. not that that will stop half naked girls trying to barr your way with their breasts and butts.
when you come out of uru 24, turn left and after a few yards you are on rua carioca, a busy street which crosses uruguiana at right angles. you will see the carioca metro stop straight ahead. instead of going across the paved area to the metro stop, turn right along rua carioca. look for a red canopy and you have found casarao, a club that is a tiny shade up from most 1r places. have a drink and see if anything takes your fancy.
when you come out of casarao, continue along rua carioca but cross over. just before the next street, look for the iris cinema (which you may want to avoid) and continue a few paces to carioca 59. the elevator here actually works, though you may find the stairs quicker. again, roughly 1r a minute. (there are dozens of places like this in centro, though i think these must be the biggest).
3rd day. suitably attired in your slumming clothes and not looking bright red from the beach, you head for vm. this is quite a short hop from carioca, and a bigger hop from copa. out towards maracana football stadium. the easiest way is to get a 455 bus and jump off straight after it speeds over the flyover, but as you are probably unaquainted with the area and with buses on your first visit, you might want to get a metro (most straightforward is sao cristovao, though not the nicest) and walk back the way (without crossing over) on a narrow footpath by the freeway until you come to the iron bridges at praca da bandeira where you turn left and then take the 2nd right. if you are nervous or exhausted you might take a taxi (getting out at bandeira if you want to look cool) or just driving all the way up. on your way back, you might want to walk round the corner to bandeira, both to familiarise yourself with the area and also to get a taxi in working order (a bit like not getting a taxi from outside help). to get a bus, cross all six lanes of traffic (by the bridge unless the roads are very quiet) and wait for one with copacabana on the front and flag it down. vm is 20r for the girl and between 5 & 8r for the room. you may save 1r by taking your own condoms.
this is just thrown up quickly as i´m aware of the need for a ´quickie´guide, so apologies for any typos.
of course, frequenting prostitutes will not be the main object of your trip lol. so you might want to do sugar loaf at sunset - you will remember it the rest of your life - a friday night in lapa, a stroll through the awesome botanics, a wander along a near-deserted stretch of barra beach, a boat to niteroi and the futuristic museum - and so on. if you don´t have a guidebook get a monthly guide from tourist information on princesa isabel (leme end of copa) next to frank´s bar.
some additional thoughts on VM clothing . . .
Another point maybe worth considering in advance is, what are you going to do with your clothing when you take it off??
The cubicles vary a lot and price is not necessarily an indication. For instance, some have hooks to put clothes on and one or two even a small table. Many don´t. Some are badly lit. Some casas have plumbing or leaking roof problems and so the floor may be wet. Sometimes the door doesn´t lock or even shut properly or you have to leave it open a bit to get some light. Bearing in mind what you plan to do (or might do) sexually, how secure is your clothing? Is it near the door? Is it in a neat pile? Would you notice if anyone covertly interfered with it? Is anything likely to fall out of your pockets even without any help? Will it get wet or dirty?
I´d say maybe 80 per cent of the cubicles are ok if you don´t tear your clothes off and leave them randomly on the bed. I´d say maybe 98% of the girls are honest and won´t actively try to steal. Many will go out of their way to look after you and some will even indicate where to put your clothes safely. But you might want to be prepared.
