Always time for history lessons
Just strike a match in the bathroom (or 2 for strong odors).
My historian friend tells me that in the very early days (1200. 1800s) they used some chemically-based lanterns along the walls to mask the odor of the sewers running under the castles.
My father swore by the match (es) trick, and it seemed to work. The candle adds ambience, always in short supply in the phils. I think the candle works not so much from replacing the bad smell but from actually drawing in and burning off gasses in the air. The sulphur in the matches may work similarly. Essentially a chemical reaction.
Most urban areas in the Phils could use a large scale application of the medieval sewer gas remedy.
