to share my experience:

After years of prowling the Sudirman and Blok M area, frequenting Korean and Japanese style karaokes, I have been following with great interest comments about Hai Lai.

My very first visit to Hai Lai was in 1996, and at that time, I felt that it was pretty run-down compared to KTVs in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. I opened a "package" that gave me a total of 5 bottles. I remembered during one of my trips that it had a fire, and of course, my bottles went up in smoke as well.

Last week, a local friend took me to a newly opened karaoke in Pangeran Jakarta (I think) area, located in the Lindeteves Building. The place is called SUN CITY, and it was very, very impressive.

Walking in, you are immediately wowed by the decor, and sense of exclusivity. From the front entrance, there is a small stage in front of an extended bar, where a local band is playing. There are various GROs seated and they look very sultry, eyeing you as you walk-in.

We walked through the entire place on the way to our KTV room, and everything was plush and luxurious, very similar to what I saw in X2, only much bigger and grand.

The room we were assigned to had an attached bathroom, and the door to the room proper was thickly padded -- sound-proofed! There were 3 plasma displays, one for the song selections, one for the singinging, and the next one showing ESPN programs. The amazing thing is that the room had a split level, with a staircase that led upstairs to a small balcony, from which you could look down on your friends as they were singing and dancing, and this was the smallest room in the entire place! At the balcony, there was a leather divan, the size of a large single bed, and I was told to avail myself with the girl I was with, if I was so inclined.

The entire establishment was very skewed towards Chinese, mama-sans were all pattering away in Mandarin, and you had selections of PRCs and local girls to choose from. They even had PRC mama-sans who could speak Bahasa Indonesia.

The prices are sky high -- it cost Rp 500,000 for a local girl, and Rp 600,000 for a PRC just to sit with you. For FS, they had an adjacent hotel that you could go to, and it cost Rp 1.5 million for a local, and Rp 1.9 million for a PRC.

I opted for a local girl, and we were shown 3 parades of about 10 girls each, before I selected one girl. My observation is that despite the high-class ambience, the local girls available were just so-so, averaging 5 to 6 in terms of looks. Most of them were quite chubby, and the only good thing was that they were dressed in gowns and proper attire. But, as the saying goes, you can bring the girl out of the 'kampung' but you can't bring the 'kampung' out of the girl.

Compared to Korean-style establishments, I think the girls in Sun City are below expectations. In Korean and Japanese style places, we had slimmer and sexier bods to choose from. The girls are also more wanton in allowing caresses and "playing" with you.

My girl in Sun City was quite frigid, as even after a couple of hours and many drinks, I couldn't even cop a feel of her breasts.

In summary, I would frequent these places (I was told that Sands and K-7 are similar) only if I had a very big potato of a client to entertain, and needed to splurge on him to get a huge contract.

Other than that, I don't think the prices are in any way reasonable -- we seem to be paying more for the decor, and what the hell for?

I was in Pattaya about 6 months ago and met a guy there who when I mentioned I lived in Jakarta, he let me know that he had recently visited Jakarta because he'd read online on this site that you can easily pick up girls at the malls. He said he tried several malls and had zero success. He also said he never could find the Atrium mall that had been mentioned so often. (It's not the easiest place to find, I'll admit.)

Please do not be misled by the statement that "you can easily pick up girls at the malls". It's not as easy as you'd think at most malls. If you go to Atrium mall, it's no problem because that's a down market shopping plaza known for that kind of thing. If you go to a place like Senayan City, you can expect to have a rough time of it picking up any girls. It's possible, but not easy. Senayan City is a nice, modern shopping mall and is more like the malls you'll find in KL. Any mall in Jakarta is still a better pick up spot than in KL, but it's only certain ones where it's easy. The quality of girls you'll find at a place like Senayan is about 10 times better than at Atrium, but the girls at Atrium are much easier to pick up.

Those of us who have been to Jakarta many times will easily be able to pick out the girls who are possible pick ups. But someone new on the scene will not be able to pick them out so easily. A place like Atrium mall, they are basically all there to be picked up so it's like shooting fish in a barrell. But I dont know of another mall in town like that and the quality of the girls is low to average at best. And if you do see a good one, move immediately or you will not have a chance at her 5 minutes later since she'll be taken by some local.
