Everyone has their own risk tolerance, a 3% or less chance of STD contraction is a risk I'm willing to take.

This is the key point. Possession for 1 gram is just possession; you don't get major "jail time". But with more than 1 gram, they can charge you with intent to sell; that is years in jail.
