I have no idea why they did what they did or why they kept them so long, but what I can tell you is to be vigilant about your habits. I personally would never join a WhatsApp group where women solicit services, especially if you aren't going to be vigilant enough to erase your phone before leaving the country. If they find out that was the reason you were traveling, the US can put a hold on your passport and come up with some crazy charges.
