Davao and Past Experiences
Guys,
I was in Cebu when I heard the story of the guy who was beaten to death by his former girlfriend's boyfriend. I keep saying that ALL these ladies have filipino boyfriends. No one listens. Always be prepared. Staying in hotels with security helps. Constantly being on the alert helps and NEVER be alone in sleazy sections of Davao or any Phil city. Do NOT become acquainted with filipino men EVER (save upper class filipino/chinese assuming you can move in their circles).
How did the gf get P35,000? Price in Phils to have someone killed by filipino thugs is P10,000. Please note that women in the Phils are poor and poverty leads to desperate acts to survive.
I am back now. Great Trip and met a new lady, age 20, in Davao City.

Filipinas Who Kill and the Men Who Love Them
With regard to the foreigner who was killed in Davao, I have heard a number of these stories. The following stories were reported in Cebu newspapers and happened this summer.
One Brit was shot on the highway in Minglanilla, Cebu. Although the first story was that he was robbed and shot when he resisted handing over his wallet, eventually it was discovered that his wife lied.
Before his murder, the Brit had been at home when there was a knock at the door. Some guys were there because he was behind on his motorcycle payments.
"What motorcycle? " he asked.
It turns out his wife had bought a motorcycle for her boyfriend in another city. When the Brit had the motorcycle repossessed, the boyfriend retaliated by openly shooting him.
I agree with DS.-don't kid yourself about a Filipino boyfriend in the background.
Don't drink with Filipinos, especially anyone you don't know or in any out of the way place.
One Swede was murdered in Cebu this summer, together with his wife and two pre-school children. The home out in the province was robbed and then torched. I've thought it through, and I am a firm believer in the increased security afforded by a hotel. If you buy a house, you should consider a security guard as a necessary expense, not a luxury or an option. Even then, a guard can be bought off or tip off others as to what you have, where it is, and what your routine is.
I train in the martial arts. I don't get too drunk. I don't ever antagonize Filipinos.
And I live a low profile. This summer a Swede was hanging out drinking and paid his bar tab after pulling out a massive wad of pesos. If this guy had been murdered, the papers would have very accurately said that he was fun-loving, generous, and didn't have an enemy in the world. I insisted on walking him back to his house.
I don't think he realized how dangerous it is to get drunk and then pull out a huge bundle of cash in full view of the street. Sure, you could do that every night for years and have no problem, but you're tempting fate. All it takes is that one time that someone ruthless passes by, or word gets out about this rich foreigner who hangs out every night at Bar X, always has a huge wad of cash, and walks home on Rizal Street.
