Ymmv alas the women in Baja do not compare to Colombia. Again, ymmv but If anyone has checked into the casa sites on catador Colombia the prices start around $60. Legit. You can spend more. But, I do enjoy the pace of the city, the weather is great of course. I'm here mostly for medical stuff, so I've found myself in traffic during rush hours (morning, lunch and evenings), and I can't say that the traffic is terrible, compared to most places I've been. Like you won't get stuck for 2-3 cycles at a traffic light as an example.

Colombian food definitely isn't great, though. But there's lots of restaurants that serve other stuff so there's that. Trade-offs.

Besides how green the entire city is, I've been really impressed by how clean it is. Compared to most places I've been in the developing world, the streets are generally clean.

It's also only taken me a single week to understand why people here really fucking hate creep cams in El Centro, and bad behavior at Parque Lleras.

I've seen guys here say "Colombian people are proud", in a condescending kind of way. What I've seen is that the vast majority of people here are just decent people going on about their lives. I don't see a lot of social chaos: people queue up to use the ATM, or to pay for stuff at the store. They don't speaking loudly indoors. Are generally polite. Even the fucking motos are at a reasonable noise level! Having just left Santo Domingo where motos give you a headache, here you'll be surrounded by dozens on the roads and it isn't an unbearable racket.

Overall, you get the sense that Colombians aspire to live more sophisticated and classy lives than their country's economic reality can match. You simply cannot say that about most poorer countries. So it's easier to understand why they wouldn't take too kindly for their city / country to be depicted as some open air brothel. My other post was about how mature they are about sex, overall. Which I think a lot of guys take to mean that the entire place is a meat market and they can behave poorly with no consequence.

All of this kind of contrasts with how brutal and ruthless their criminal element is. It's a real dichotomy.

For what it's worth, I'm staying in Belen, where there's a more working class vibe. Not a lot of foreigners, or wealthy locals.

That said the USD index (opposite all trade currencies) is actually above its average since 1990.

What has happened with the USD against the Colombian Peso looks to be idiosyncratic. In the last 4 months, USD is about 20% lower vs the Col Peso. In that same period of time, the USD is higher vs the Real, the Canadian Dollar, and the Euro.

I don't know what's going on with Colombia but there appears to be significant foreign flows into the country in the last few months.

Keep in mind the USD / Col rate was below 2,000 for virtually all of 2010 - 2014. Not saying it's going to go back there, but it certainly could.

As far as the Peso is concerned I guess the fundamentals are strong Tourism is up Oil is up Coffee is up and Gold is up. That helps. There is renewed investor confidence in Colombia and that plays a part as well.

Finally Cocaine is way up as far as it being sold abroad and as that money comes back into the Colombian economy that's probably the biggest help.

I'm no economist but that's generally what I see.

I would encourage frequent Colombia visitors to consider getting some kind of visa or finding a bank who will open a simple account there. A couple of months ago you could get up to 14% Interest on a Rappi Bank account. You could lock in a 12% Interest rate on a 6 month CD as well. The weirdness of Colombia is that a savings account earns more interest
than a CD which tells you all you need to know about the wild Inflation and currency swings with the Peso. Maybe 6 months from now we will be at 3500 to 1. Who knows?

It's already expensive for a LATAM country and an additional 33% drop in exchange rates will make Colombia not worth it. The prices for food and alcohol at restaurants here is already more than many places in the US. Combine that with more expensive lodging and the only advantage it would have over Brazil would be the flight options.

The Brazilian real was 6.18 end of 2024 and is now 5.12, regardless of any uptick in the past months. The EUR was 0.97 end of 2024 and is now 0.86. It was 1.02 in 2022, extremely rare for the dollar to be more than the euro. And the answer to why this is happening is obvious.

The Japanese sold US securities to shore up the Yen. Technically Foreign Investment is down in Colombia this year but the Peso is up. My oblique uneductaed guess is that Cocaine crops have been way up for years Drugs went out and money came in. Other than that I got nothing on why the Peso is so high against the dollar.

If I were a Colombia simp Gringo youtuber I would encourage you to not come hoping that would some how affect the Peso or the amount a Parque Llreas Puta charges. As an Expat and a monger I'the say that anyone stupid enough to go to Parque Llreas right now deserves whatever price a chica charges you. Since my first time in meddy in January 2025 prices have gone up 33% just due to the dollar / peso fuckery. Still going to go to Colombia as it is my favorite but damn this stuff needs to chill out.
