To pay or not to pay, that's the question.
It's quite chocking to read about the terma prices, R$385. That's a very expensive way to get laid in Brazil. Termas are nice. Dress up in a robe, socializing with the girls and go for a session. IMO I would find robe-termas very boring if I went more than once every trip.
VM is still fun with the big variety, but it's no longer a good value as many girls raised their prices from R$25 to R$35-40. That's for a 30 minute-session which might turn into a 20 minute-session if the d*ke downstairs decides to ring the bell.
Balcony isn't my cup of tea. The overall quality is lousy. However I wouldn't say it's necessary bad value. A friend of mine goes there twice a week. He picked some beautiful girls at Balcony and pays between R$80-100. Sessions that often turns into TLN.
The best value in Rio is without doubt the privês. I love them. It's so convenient to visit privês. A short metro-trip to centro and you'll have lots of options. I couldn't ask for more. A presentation of beautiful women in all shapes and colours, clean rooms/cabins with showers and good service. When you leave after 30-60 minutes later you do it newly showered, newly f*cked and with a big smile. I don't do any more night-mongering when in Rio because of regular GFs, so the privês suits me best.
Don't cry over Rio becoming so expensive. Try other cities. Brazil is huge. In São Paulo you have more options than you can imagine. In Manaus it cost R$50 to f*ck a Remulos stripper. In Salvador a session at Morganas massagem cost R$30. In Fortaleza I picked several free-lancers at the beach and payed between R$20-40 for 2-pop sessions. Belo Horizonte, São Luís, Belém, Macapá etc all have all offers great sex at very good value.
Appreciate the recommendations
Chris,
Let this be a learning experience for you. For someone smart enough to get into grad school, you need to develop some street smarts. NEVER leave your cash or credit cards anywhere that a garota can have access to them. Putting $2000 in a sock is just plain dumb. That's the first place a potential thief will look. I have read on this forum of thieves holding up someone at gunpoint and ordering him to take off his shoes and socks. They know where gringos hide things.
When I was a newbie, many years ago, I was pickpocketed by a garota I was negotiating with on Av. Atlantica. She didn't get much money, but I learned a valuable lesson from it: NEVER carry cash in your pocket, except maybe for some small bills you might need to have at your disposal. Also, never leave anything unlocked in your hotel room / apartment.
If you observe 3 cardinal rules (maybe other posters can think of more) , you should be pretty much theft-proof:
1. When you are on the street, ALWAYS use a money belt. I use one that I hang around my neck and tuck inside my shirt. There are also belts that go around your waist or around your ankle (not recommended). The only way I could be robbed is if I were held up at gunpoint (not likely if I avoid being alone on dark or obscure locations).
2. In your hotel room / apartment, ALWAYS lock up your cash and cards, either in a safe or in your suitcase, and make sure the garota doesn't see where you put the key. Better yet, use a combination lock.
3. NEVER accept a drink from a garota. If she drugs you, this negates the first two rules as it gives her ample time to search your person and / or break into a suitcase.
I could also add a fourth rule: if you are staying in an apartment that has a two-sided lock, lock the door from the inside and hide the key. That way, even if she drugs you, she won't be able to get out and will still be there when you come to.
I am assuming that you are somewhat of a newbie, and as newbies we all made mistakes. Your mistakes turned out to be very costly. Here's hoping you learned from them.
Lorenzo
The gloomy part is that I followed the safety precautions. I did lock both of my suit cases and there were right next to my bed. It was my first day in that studio apartment and I couldn't find a place to hide the suitcases. She slotted in a piece of equipment, tool or a knife in between the closed zipper and opened it somehow during I was sleeping worn out by a extensive flight, and partying all day. I can`t change the past and I'm sure that puta who stole $2500 had the ride of a lifetime. However, I will be genuinely take the strategy of being 'theft-proof' in consideration during my next trip to Rio one week after Christmas, in Jan 2012. Also, I am not a newbie; this was my 13th trip in the last six years.
