So they took me on a nice little cruise around Ermita, playing cops, stopped in front of Ermita police station, most of the people jumped off and went into this little fenced in place in front of the station as if being held. Very realistic. One of the guys actually went up to the station and said something and came back and claimed I owed a fine of 5k. Playing a convincing con. I tried to go *toward* the police station to safety but 3 of the guys held me back and told me that the fine was 15-20 days jail or 5k. I only carry enough for buying drinks and food for the night, plus a little extra so there is a little left over to make a mugger happy enough not to kill my ass if I get mugged coming back from the bar. [I am not much of a fighter, only thing I beat up is pussy. :)] So I tried to cut losses and told them I only had 500. Which was in my right pocket. They insisted to check all my pockets and got the 1k bill from my other pocket and let go of my arms. Then said they would take me to the hotel to get 3500 to pay the supposed 5000 fine. (I think the real public smoking 'fine' from real police is just a ticket) So I played along and got a ride back to the hotel. They stopped at a nearby corner and claimed that they would wait there because its a one way street. So I went into the hotel and told the front desk people and they intended to get the plate (probably stolen anyway) and call the real police but never had the guts to go out there. Since I already had a good bang with my late afternoon MBC pickup, I'm staying in knowing that they are out there running the street and could snag me again and be really pissed off because I hadn't brought more money like they expected. I recommend that anyone who can't get away, from these thugs, play along like I did and pretend that you will bring more money. That way you end up safe at your hotel instead of dead in an alley somewhere. And never carry more money than you need. If I had been out for something special other than dinner and drinks, they would have stolen a lot more from my pockets other than my drinking money. For example the other night I was carrying 6k down the street to the Cebu Pacific office at Robinson to get a ticket. And weaving through the crowd of cars along the street so I didn't stand out.

So, I'd be more worried about the teams of thugs than catching anything incurable from girls. I've seen this kind of scam run elsewhere but never seen anyone grabbed like I was. Had I not already heard of these scams and seen them in played in Mexico, I might have been taken for a lot of money rather than just my lunch (drinking) money. Or maybe worse if I pushed the issue by resisting further against all those people. And the street kids, as I mentioned the other day, are my primary concern. I haven't seen them turn violent, but the other day I was accosted by about 3 at a time and I think they were trying to pick my back pockets [empty pockets, pity them], but I kept swatting them away and walking through traffic to see if they will bug out. Unfortunately they are not scared of getting hit and will follow you right through traffic. I swore one was going to get hit following me yesterday night because I timed it so there was only enough time for me to get across and anyone behind me should have got smacked. I spoke to a gent in MBC yesterday who said that he spent 8000 in Makati for a single barfine plus drinks. I cant imagine carrying that much, or a credit card. Its too much to lose. I would love to know your general age, what kind of clothes you wear all that good stuff to see if they might be profiling a bit. I've been in a lot of bad areas in my life and have never even come close to anything like this. I don't walk down extremely dark small alleys, but certainly I have been in many third world countires walking back to my hotel around 3-4AM and I keep alert but I've never even got a weird look from anyone. The brother of a friend was mugged in Manila about 3 weeks ago. They're not close so I only got the following: he's about 40+ yrs of age, Singaporean (Chinese) and he got mugged at knifepoint (knife held behind him) when he stepped out of his hotel.

I know that others have written extensively on this topic but it always seems to recur. This is a third world country where almost half the people get along on less than $2 a day. It's no wonder that some of them see some of us as prey. One way to lessen the risk-particularly in Ermita and Malate-is to minimize the walking. If you're going to MBC, take a taxi to the door, and when you leave do likewise. If you must walk, don't do so alone and don't do so for very long. Leave your credit cards and jewelry in the safe at your hotel or locked up securely elsewhere. If you don't have buddies here with whom you can roam around a bit, hire a security guard from your hotel for a couple of hours. Puta Playa's tale is horrifying and I suspect it happens all too often and never gets reported.

I stayed at the Hyatt Malate approximately a 4-5 minute walk to MBC and ALWAYS took a Taxi. Believe me it is the best 50 pesos $1 you can spend.

So in a sick way I am happy that it happened and it was the best possible outcome. Because I don't carry much cash, and don't wear any watches or jewelrey, carry cards or anything. I got pursued for about 7 blocks by a street walker that followed me from the KTV district. Damn! I had to duck into a restaurant and go out the back door to get away. I like it here in Manila. A few cigarette butts, whilst distasteful are nothing compared to the carbon monoxide put out by smoke belching jeepneys, but no one goes after the jeepneys, as they are a powerful lobby who can shut the nations movement in a hurry so they are left alone. The metro Manila smoking ban is all for show. A couple years back there was a ban introduced in Makati against smoking in bars, restaurants etc. A few guys got fined, and now two years later, everyone smokes the same as normal even with such a law. Cabs from directly in front of any of Manila's mongering haunts also have their potential pitfalls. From a former WG whom I trust came this story. She left the former LA Cafe with a well-dressed European monger whom she'd been with before. He was staying at one of the better hotels near Vito Cruz, maybe Traders or Century Park. They got in a cab in front of LAC and he told the driver to go to the hotel. The cabbie called somebody on his cellphone. The woman thought he was going abnormally slow. It was night, traffic wasn't bad, and most cabbies like to get there quickly, collect, and move on. About half way to the hotel, near the 24-hour Aristocrats restaurant, a police car pulled the cab over. No apparent reason. They told the European to get out and started searching him. When one started to stick a hand in his pocket he resisted. He explained to her later he feared they'd plant drugs on him. But he pulled out his wallet and pulled his pockets inside out to show he had nothing to hide. They went through his wallet then handed it back. Later he discovered they'd cleaned him out of 5000 or more pesos, leaving him barely enough to pay the cab fare. The woman is convinced the cabbie and the corrupt police were in cahoots.

Some recommend walking a block away from MBC before taking a cab-either to the corner of Mabini and Romero-Salas or to the right out of MBC on Romero-Salas toward the bay and the frontage road by Roxas. One regular indicates that the police sometimes set up on Romero-Salas in the block between del Pilar and Mabini, so maybe taking the right toward Roxas is the better bet. It is not well lighted and only one little outdoor eatery along the way, however, until you get near Roxas. In general, I think there is some advantage to going that directions simply because so few others do, and so the bad guys are less likely to be set up to trap you in that block of street.

In short, there is no 100% safe exit from MBC. My trusted female source insists that because foreigners are deliberately targeted, even being accompanied by a Filipina makes the foreigner a more difficult target because she can yell and attract attention in Tagalog, call on a cellphone, and even wield rocks, sticks, and other weapons within reach. But women alone are also vulnerable to the police because of some archaic curfew law for unaccompanied women at night on the streets of Manila. It's just another of the many police shakedown devices.

Some good advice from others: carry only enough money to pay for drinks, food, and taxi; leave big cash, passport and credit cards at the hotel; better to carry a xerox copy of the passport or other picture I'd; walk quickly and with purpose and don't flash jewelry and other valuables.

It is prudent to catch a running taxi from Mabini street. Just exit MBC and go north through the small st where there are few mideastern restaurents to Mabini. Mabini is a major st where you can find cruising taxis all hours.

Never catch cruising taxis from del pilar. These cabbies know what MBC is and all forigners hang out there. In other words farther away you catch the taxi from MBC, it is better. Beware that some girls are shady as well.
