Sad to say, Sosua is not even close to its 'glory nights and days'!
"We all know it 'things are not as bad as they seem'. For Sosúa this popular wisdom has even greater significance, since the measures the government takes, our experience tells us again and again, that these measures are maintained only temporarily. As of Friday 3 December local women were only allowed when accompanied in the main road Pedro Clisante of Sosúa were the nightlife is. Also all bars should be closed from road side view. Meanwhile, most bars installed (including the Central Bar and the Bermuda Bar) , a new balustrade. The Latino Bar of the Vice-Mayor Willy 'El Chamo' is now sealed with dark glass panels from the street. We spoke with the owner of the Merenguebar and he announced that the Merenguebar will also be closed from road side view. The flower boxes in front of its balustrade, have already been taken away. No obstacles allowed on the sidewalks.
The Tourist Police (Politur) now acts strictly, particularly against local women walking around alone. But after midnight this rule is handled a little more relaxed and then we can again see a lot of cheerful ladies in Merengueclub, the Latino's Bar and disco the 'Classico. It's almost like before and the bars and discos are full of dancing and swinging tourists and their friends and girlfriends as if there are no new measures. Especially after midnight we see a relaxation of the rules. The nightlife in the Pedro Clisante is almost the same again. We say almost, because there is no nuisance anymore from the orphans and the poor Haitian ladies who have fled their country. For many visitors of the nightlife it is a significant improvement, because some women were rather (often) intrusive. Now it is a little better organized at the Pedro Clisante and the nightlife is now almost (?) the same as it used to be, so things are not as bad as they seem to be."
But, I am happy to report that Thursday was the best night on PC since the bottom was reached, after Dec. 3!
Reality sucks, and money wins
So the cheap days are over in the North Coast. Well its good and bad, the place needed a clean-up to be frank and that includes the workers and to some degree the clients. As always money wins in every way. The DR's tourist bureau and politico / investors wanted more foreign money and that money is not from $30 hotels and $2 tacos; its from All inclusive 5- 7 day vacations that go for $2-3K for a family of four, so the math works to promote that tourism, it has turned Punta Cana and for that matter Cancun into world class destinations, when 30 years ago they were small fishing towns.
So the choices are my friends to "lurk' in the dark and wait till midnite to get any action or put up some cash and pay places like DRnights, Oxygen Retreat and so-on for ease and stress free vacationing. I don't see any other options unless your willing to explore the small towns of the DR and hunt, but with hunting that would require a lot of time spent and perhaps time wasted.
Just my two cents.
