I Was in Sousa from Dec 16-20. I Think this whole crackdown is blown out of proportion. This is my 3rd trip to DR this year.
I got there Thursday Morning and took the 8:30am flight from JFK and got there around 1:00pm Sousa Time. I stayed at New Gardens and was greeted by the Dominican Clerk at the front desk, and also met Wilfred the German Manager. The Atmosphere was pretty much the same. This time I must admit I You do not see any beggers and hustle men like I did before.
They still had chicas walking up and down, As long as they had I'd or was with a Gringo The Police will leave them alone. I Think there trying to push everything indoors and not in the open like that. You have to remember they are people that live in Sousa and they don't want to walk down the street and see Chica Puta Hoes with tight dresses walking up and down talking about Freaky Freaky and come fuck my pussy its not a good look.
Its a Buyer Market right now and we went to Classico's that night and It was stupid packed with chicas that Thursday, I'm talking over 200+ chicas. The Chicas are desperate and you can offer them 1000-1500 pesos and they will take it because if they don't someone will. The Open Bars were still packed.
I don't think this crackdown will change anything, At the end of the Day we are a Global Worldwide Recession.
And Dominican Republic is a poor country and people got to eat. Also even if you try to turn Sousa into a Tourist Spot that will take Years maybe even a decade before investors get a return on there money.
Sousa is a very boring place and there's nothing really to do, What would make a tourist choose Sousa over the rest of the Caribbean. I Think they will be a huge backlash.
Good news on the bars, the chicas, and the "toto market"; and we thank you for that.
I sincerely hope that the Powers That Be in Sosua will be satisfied to get the sex-trade "out of your face" rather than trying to close it down entirely. Much as I enjoy seeing a cute girl strut her stuff in a tight mini-dress or painted-on jeans, I can see how the residents would be put off by the show, night after night, right out there on the street. And even more so, by the girls "freaky-freaky" noises and the way they grope you out on the street.
"Turning Sosua into a tourist spot" will take years, but I've heard substantial rumors that there is a master plan for a "new improved Sosua" carried in that direction. Trouble is, So-Sewer has an "image problem" that puts off investors, and we are "the problem" to their way of thinking. Make it look decent and wholesome, and it'll be that much more attractive to the buyer. First step is to "get rid of the sex trade," the riff-raff, the punters and their putas. How do we get the punters out of Sosua? Well, how about if we get the chicas out of the street? I believe that may be the reasoning behind Politur's "whack-a-mole" campaign. Is it working? For some; look at what Sidney had to say about his Haitiana girlfriend.
Will it stop the sex-trade entirely? I'm sure it won't. It may drive it indoors; it probably will make it a whole lot less blatant, at least on the street; but there are loads and loads of Dominican men in the country, too, who are looking to get their freak on. It won't go away, just "behind the curtains".
Personally, I could still be happy with a 'toto market' that's less in-your-face; even though my mid-October visit did Get me ready for the new TSA Enhanced Pat-Down technique.

Sosua "master plan" from DR1
I finally did find some planners' conceptions for the "new Sosua". This is what they'd like to do to Los Charamicos:

There's some more "master plan" information on DR1; vBulletin asterisked-out the URL when I tried to post it, but I found it by Googling "sosua master plan".
Definitely a "show-me-the-money" situation here; but it could be that "the money" has decided that the time is right, especially if they are secure at having Madam Mayor in their pocket.
(My own self-interest as a boater comes up: How much per foot, per night, to get a transient slip in that marina? How much per foot per month, or per year, if I live there?)
