The first time I put a cover letter in with my application about how much I wanted to see the city, and the 2nd time I just said I wanted to return because I liked it so much the first time.

In fact, for the first time ever, I did actually walk by an ENTIRE table of bloody fucking brits one evening at my fave restaurant in my incognito little metro away from home. I had to hold myself back from physically ejecting them or at least cursing them to get the bloody fuck out of my sight, (and out of my province!).

What I'm trying to subtly express to you is that, the single very BEST thing about going considerably out of the way to non-tourist destinations, like Ufa or Rostov, is not having to listen to any stupid fucking whining complaining spoiled overspending impatient beer drinkin' hot dog eatin' yank TOURISTS!

Agree with you on that, although if travelling Russia Yanks are about 8th on the list of foreigners most likely to come across... Brits, Italians, Germans, Turks, Japanese, Chinese, Indians all seem to be more avid travellers than our lot. Then again, I generally don't hang out in the lobby of the Marriotts & Co. where you'll find our paranoid countrymen huddled up.

On mamba/rambler/mail. Ru you can either write messages to people, or you can "wink at them." This is like the "poke" feature on facebook. It doesn't do anything besides telling the other person that you "winked" at them. Kind of silly and it gets annoying for girls who probably get 5 of them a day.

I think it's best to introduce yourself in russian or english and say you'd like to get to know them.

Try 100. When a hot girl first posts a new profile in a large place like Kiev or Moscow, she can count on getting 100s of messages, winks, valentines... whatever. She can afford to be very, very, very selective. Many of the messages she'll never even read. I've sat next to a girlfriend of mine and watched her work the posts... hilarious.
