This is a very accurate and well said summary. I used to go with a girl in Villa Venezuela and we'd routinely go into her barrio to get her and drop her off and nobody paid one iota of notice that a gringo was waiting for her.

There are 1,200 taxi cooperativos in Managua clumped into about 20 some-odd larger unions of them so good luck in finding that brand name.

Here's what you have with a taxi - Cooperative name on it, the names run the gamut - religious figures, popes, volcanoes, even the solar eclipse. There are a few that will say independente, and they all have distinctive license plates M plus the 5 digit taxi number which is painted on the body of the taxi several times.

If you leave from the hotel ask the door guard to noticeably write down the number of the cab when you get in which evens the playing field a lot. There is a bigger risk of overcharging than robbery. Always insist on "exclusivo" or they pick up others en route which adds risk and worse, more time.

I still just use a paid driver, if you rent a car they will rent a driver too if you want for around $15 a day more.
