Very well, let's proceed with the generalization / categorization of "The Thai Bar Girls" as leg-spreading customer rip-off objects, which we farang can use as we wish and throw away after usage. For some people obviously "structures" must be simplified, otherwise they cannot understand them.

I know some bar girls :). All of them have stories. Most of them don't like the job. Some of them really make money, others just make enough for a reasonable living. Many of them have family in Isaan, living close to the poverty line.

Some of them have given up the dream to find a boy-friend or husband, and they start to squeeze as much money out of customers as they can get. Others go even for free, if they feel something, and the hope is there that this could be the man who takes care of them and their families in the future.

Some of them are too lazy to work in 7/11 or a department store, and they found out that they can make money more easy in a bar. Others simply cannot find a job, at least not a job which generates that amount of income that they can send their kids to school and take care of their parents. That's what I call the "Eldest Sister Phenomenon".

Some usually younger ones have Thai boyfriends, and only go ST. Once they made some money they don't show up the next day, because they spend the time with their boyfriend ( --> money disappears magically). Then they return to the bar.

Now - I leave the above mentioned "objects" to you, though I don't understand why you are still participating in the game, if the involved counterparts for GFE/fun/sex are of that quality. The real art of mongering is to find the perls in this mountain of available women here in Thailand. Generalization does not really help anybody to get there.

No, i am not a customer, and i don't know Giotto, but i do agree with his perspective on this.

My experience is that whilst some may well bring in serious amounts of money, very few build up much wealth. It is all given on to support family, and the temples. Their choice, different place different culture. Not for us to judge, who says it is wrong for the young to take care of their parents?

I have a lovely girl (in my eyes) and every time i am in Bkk, around once a month, i stay in her condo. Nothing flash, not big, but perfectly comfortable and more importantly very special for me to stay with her in her place. I reckon what i give her along the way i save just on hotel and food bills! Yes, absolutely!

In my opinion, I don't think the term "prostitute" in and of itself is a negative term, it's HOW people refer to it that can make it negative.
Calling it "working girl" or "lady of the night" is just trying to sugar coat it and does not mean you think better of the ladies.

Yes, I call them prostitutes but it is the same as calling a postman a postman, that's their job, nothing more.

Not that rare. 50000 baht a month (and more) is not unusual earnings for a P4P girl in Pattaya, Bangkok and other tourist destinations in Thailand. Many girls also have one or several sponsors (and more often than not, they don't stop working when their sponsors are back home anyway despite what they might have said to them) and can get even more money from them.

Sure, they send a lot of money to their families (often, half of their earnings). But many girls spend almost as much money on parties, gambling, new clothes, new shoes, new bags, new mobile phones, methamphetamines, cosmetics (make-up, whitening creams...), etc.

And of course, even the most successful girls won't earn big money (for Thailand) during all their life. It lasts just a few years. They know that and that's why a P4P girl will try to find a "good" foreign husband as soon as possible even if he won't give her as much money as she can earn as a prostitute. Those girls know that it's a financial security in the long term for them and their family.

For your information, poverty line is around 1500 baht per month (it was 1386 baht per month in 2006). I have yet to meet a single P4P girl who doesn't earn several times more than that amount per month!
