First up, I think he is talking about Pub Street but I have to say I've never really been aware of street walkers offering their services or even lingering. I've been in and around that area at all hours of the day and night, solo and with friends, sober and fairly drunk and I've never been approached. Apart from tuk-tuk drivers.

There is a souvenir market nearby (I can never remember if it is the Old Market or the New Market) but it is parallel to Pub Street between Hospital Street, Streets 9 & 11 and the river. While some of the operators of tourist related stalls will stay open into the night it's not a major at night time draw for foreigners with money.

There is a Night Market mainly pitched at tourists but it faces onto Sivatha Rd. It is not off the end of Pub Street.

On the corner of Sivatha and Sok San Rds is X Bar, an open all hours bar that often does have WL's but the quality has been consistently reported in this forum to be average. There are a number of semi legit massage places on the same side of Sivatha Rd as well as up Sok San Rd which runs parallel with the night market.

I have never walked out through the back of the Night Market but it sounds like he may have hit a pretty low end area mainly used by locals. There are better options that should come in at a more reasonable fee.

If you are a first or second time visitor to the town then maybe try one of the motorcycle guys in Sok San Rd outside X Bar. Most speak English and will be able to show you a range of options. Be prepared to be taken some distance away from the tourist part of town but for the most part your little adventure will be fairly safe. I've done it a few times and never had a problem. Particularly if they think you're in town for a few more days.

Just to be on the safe side though, I recommend that you leave the credit cards in your room and only carry what you are prepared to spend. Or lose. Make sure you carry a few smaller bills and don't pay the driver / rider until he takes you back to where you started – unless you want to walk.

The only time you'll see their local currency (the Rial) is for small change less than one dollar. Bring dollars -- with the bills in reasonably good condition -- and with relatively new series dates and you'll be fine.
