I have spoken with many people from Venezuela and they always tell me the same thing Yes our country is very dangerous you just have to know your way around and try to stay within all the nice and safe neighborhoods. Also having a wingman from Venezuela can help a lot since they know their way around the city.

So I left Caracas yesterday so here is the quick update. Yes Caracas is dangerous however I walked around quite significantly in the afternoon and evening and didn't feel threatened. Mind you, I stayed in the El Rosal and Chacao areas.

I agree that you should try the sexycaracas site if you can speak Spanish. I couldn't so it didn't work for me. I did get to go to CMA (see the Caracas PDF that was posted on this website) and that was pretty good.

When it comes to travelling you just have to travel smart and watch out for weird situations.

I spent 2 nights in Carcas in Apr 2005 and would never return unless I was being paid very well. I stayed at Hotel las Mercedes for about $70 a night. It was part of a large mall and very nice. Every 5 minutes an ambulance would drive by my room. Be very careful walking around even during the day and do not stop and look around. I took a taxi to the Interconinental hotel, just across the street. The bartender says chicas show up there around sundown. It is very nice hotel and one of the few places that I didn't feel like I was going to be robbed. I called sexycaracas for hours until I finally got a chica for $65US. She was okay nothing as good as what I saw coming out of the elevators. There are some primo chicas there but I think you need some help getting them. I was alone and had no help. Several times I narrowly escaped robbery and I won't return. I looked over my shoulder the whole time I was there and the risk is just not worth it.
