The rule of thumb is that where you shave, scrotum or otherwise, you want to stretch the skin with your fingers. You don't want to get those folds of skin in between blades or the trimmer teeth. Use the trimmer to shorten the length before razoring.
Also do not monger on the same day you give Mr. Bushy a cleanup. No matter how safely one does it, there will always be some cuts bruises that you want to heal up.
