Bintang Mawar: The fading star, the wilted rose
I read Hilo77's very entertaining, inspiring and well-illustrated (!) report about Cherry Spa in Lokasari Plaza and remembered my less-exciting but hopefully interesting trip to Jl. Mangga Besar.
"You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy," would be my advice to the uninitiated."We must be cautious." Of course, I'm joking. There is scum and villainy there, naturally. We bring it along with us. But nothing for the average visitor who has spider-sense to worry about. And, of course, everybody has already been there already because of Hotel Travel.
One recent afternoon, I wanted to check out Bintang Mawar, which, according to old reports on other Indonesian-language boards, was an exciting bopping place open for business around 12 noon and full of working girls and freelancers. I was there previously during a slow night and wanted to know if the daytime scene was different.
It's located on the left on a side street that you will pass if you walk toward Lokasari Plaza on the way from the TransJakarta stop. BM is only 30 meters from the main street, however. Just charge on.
At night, the place looks seedy from the outside. During the day, it looks seedier and rundown. There are a few toothy scraggily parking men out front, directing traffic for Bintang Mawar and the dangdut club next door (I forget its name). At night, the sad sign for the Hotel Safari is illuminated. Only some of its letters still function.
Inside it is dark. While the girls sit right by the door, you cannot see them when you enter: Your eyes are adjusting to the low light inside. There looked to be about 15 when I entered. The place is not too big: Maybe 25 tall tables and stools and a wall mounted television that shows pictures of the girls identified by number (although none were wearing visible numbers).
At 12 noon, there were about four other dudes there, all middle-aged Indonesians. None looked too happy. I guess they had their game scowls on. Actually, they were probably just anxious.
The mami made a few minutes of small talk with me and then brought over a girl: A pretty petit 19-year-old from Tasikmalaya with a slim body, long hair, a sweet face and some crooked teeth.
This is what the girl told me about how things worked at BW: They work from about 11 in the morning to 11 at night. There were 15 girls working at the moment, although in the evening there would be about 75 girls (which would make the club full to the point of swelling, if true). The youngest girl was 19, the oldest 28. She had been working in Jakarta for a month (naturally) and would go back home in another three: Apparently, her co-workers were all from the same area and were all recruited here on contract. During their off time, she and the 7 other girls in her nearby dormitory room would watch television.
The girl said that there were indeed bule guests at the Bintang Mawar. People spoke English "little-little", she said. So come on down!
The price was 325, including the room, which was unchanged from the last time I visited. The room, by the way, is accessed by a dark, narrow stairway that leads to a mysterious corridor the ends up in the Hotel Safari next door.
BTW, Hotel Safari, or S-f-ri at night, since some of the neon letters on the sign are burned out, is where the ladies who hang about inside Lokasari Plaza after the sun goes down will offer to take you for short time fun.
Kalau saya tidak salah, because I can't remember clearly from that last trip, the hotel rooms are smaller than a kost, coming with a single bed, a television, a glass-enclosed shower cube and lacking full walls (meaning they stop with about a foot from the ceiling).
What special hell, I wonder, would it be to stay as an overnight guest in the Bintang Mawar.
In the short term, it was fine. There was even a clean, if threadbare, towel.
I think the draw of the place is for middle-class Javanese men who might not get a warm reception at the Chinese-focused Hotel Travel and who are looking for gadis desa.
But no, I didn't feel like repeating the experience this time. I tipped the petit 19-year-old Rp 50.000, tipped the mami Rp 10.000, paid my bill and went on my way. To Kimochi Spa, which deserves a separate report.
