So, went back to East Nanjing Road, looking for a tea shop. Again touts kept coming, even with all the mass amount of cops around.
I just decided fuck it and went with one to a place on Tianjian (Road I think, I know it was an incredibly stupid decision but I was really bored and wanted to figure what would happen.
Inside there were some decent looking girls, 7-8's I would guess, most seemed pretty uninterested aside from one, she was pretty excited. The girl gave me the price, 100 massage 300 for FS. I agreed, paid up front. (I was really bored.).
So she left to book us another room, heard a bit of a quarrel, then the girl came back and said all the rooms are booked and gave me my money back. So that was that and I left.
They seemed to want to get me in pretty quickly but then turned around and gave me a refund. Can anyone shed some light on what happened?
Also to Pushkin and Blacklisted, I can't really stay out past 11. I'm here studying in SH and only been here two months, I take the metro for most things and since it closes at 10 staying out late is kind of a no for me unless it's fairly close to my dormitory.

If you had gone with her you probably would have been robbed for about $500 US. She takes you to a place where she has an arrangement with the manager.
While she distracts you he brings a tray of unordered fruit and drinks. Then you get an inflated bill. She gets a cut.
50 yuan is a good days pay for a beggar. 5 would be a big amount.
My advice is to be careful with touts. Some but not all of them are thugs. Just keep walking and don't talk to them or make eye contact. A polite tourist saying, "No thank you," is what they want.
That is the start of a conversation to them.

She walked in 2 steps behind me (2 nights in a row) like we were not together and no problems. I was stopped once with that girl from Guangzhou I mentioned and they signed her in. Nothing ever came of it.
No issues either way, it really has never been an issue. Chinese law requires guests to be signed in. But like all things in China, some are followed some are not.
I have heard the Chinese hotels are more lenient but I don't have any experience there.

This scam will always work because as the American circus baron PT Barnum said " there's a sucker born every minute" It happened to me in 07. I went back the next day and got half my money back by yelling at the MaMa and pounding my fist on a table.
Has anone else seen the man with no fingers and a burned face at the Jingan Temple metro stop? He was in Suzhou a few years ago, but moved to greener pastures. It has been suggested that he failed to satisfy a loan shark and attacked. I gave him 20 kuai yesterday and he was extremely grateful.

I was under the impression from talking to some working girls who I became friendly with was that the sign in was meant to protect us from being robbed. They said that WGs would steal from johns and then disappear. However, if they are signed in, then they can be easily located if they take anything and it's a real deterrent for the girl.
I never liked it as its seems like an invasion of my privacy.
Any thoughts?

AL.[/QUOTE]I used to stay at the Sheraton HQ. There was a laminated letter on the table that stated it was Chinese law for guests after 11 pm. They did not enforce it as the hotel had a key card system in the elevator and a note on the table.
I would walk into the hotel in my late 40's (almost 50) with my 25 year old Chinese girlfriend on my arm. We obviously did not look like we belonged together. The doorman would push the elevator button for us! Obviously they thought the note and elevator card got them off the hook.
Interestingly enough, the Hilton in Jing an seems to have relaxed forcing the sign in since they added a key card to the elevator.

Shanghai is wide open and Jingan is a very compact area full of possibilities. Go way back and there is plenty of archival information.
