Not Running Away. Embracing (Another Perspective)
Hi Furry, I disagree with you. I lived in the PI in the 80s and had the time of my life. I plan on retiring there in less than 10 years and raising a family. It is a beautiful country, affordable, speaks English, and has great food and culture, moreso than the other 20+ countries I have visited worldwide. I am well educated and do not lack social skill or any of the other maladies you suggest. Moreover, I've met several expats of my caliber who enjoy the PI a whole lot, too. It is not a perfect country but what country is?
One thing I've learned after four trips to the Philippines is, never take the place seriously. This is adult Disneyland. You come, you pillage and you leave with good memories. No disrespect to expats, but the thought of me spending more than two weeks in the Philippines is unfathomable. I truly feel sorry for Filipinos who must live their entires lives in a shit-filled, hopeless, corrupt country.
Aside from the sex and girls, one benefit of traveling there is that it makes me grateful for what I have in America, to be with friends, family and coworkers who aren't trying mooch off me or feign kindness for ulterior motive. It makes me appreciate technology and civilization. It even makes me appreciate my dead-end job. The women in my life in America may not be as pretty or fawn all over me, but I know if they like me, it's likely genuine and I can have a real emotional and intellectual connection with her. It's not just her tits and vagina.
Let's be honest here. Many guys go to the Philippines for love and sex because they have problems at home. Perhaps they lack social skills, they're workaholics, don't have a life, have no real friends, estranged from family, etc. They look to the Philippines as a substitute for their drab reality.
The truth is, no matter how bad your life is at home, it will likely be worse in the Philippines. The country is crap. India may be poorer (at least for now) , but I don't sense Indians being shady, corrupt, conniving, lazy or moochers. So enjoy the Philippines while you're there but don't go there to run away from your problems. Confront your problems instead.
Living in the philippines
FF, I usually travel to the Phils for sporting reasons, and because of that, I get to meet quite a lot of expats who live there.
I make a point of asking them why they life in the Phils, (or Thailand, or Cambodia) , and the most common reason that I get is that they had to get away from the nanny state, which now intrudes into every part of their lives, and controls every action, including the most basic activities in everyday life.
And that is the reason why I am about to pack up and move to the Phils also.
Of course, without the total protection that you get in the nanny state, life can be a bit more risky. Maybe you will be ripped off here and there.
But at least inthe Phils you can enjoy a much higher level of freedom than in the average western country.
My country is now a police state. Try a simple experiment. Stand on any street corner in the downtown area of where you live. Over a periiod of say 4 hours, count the number of police that you see.
Now, do the same on any street corner in any city in the Phils. You will see many less.
And remember, a police officer is any person who has power of arrest, not just uniformed police.
In my country, people are very law abiding, but they abide by the law out of fear of being caught by the police, not out of any inherent sense of community, or responsibility.
In my country, every transaction that you make at a bank is monitored, every email is recorded and scanned, every phone call the same. Your life is not your own any more.
We are afrais of everything. Being fried with global warming, being over-run by illegal immigrants and refugees, the ever spreading threat of islam, destruction of the environment.
In asinn coun tries, they don't care about thism stuff. It is not something that they are afraid of.
There was a very interesting article in Foreign Affairs which encapsulated the feelings that I had, but could not express. The author said that there are three dominant psyches in the world.
In the west, the dominant psyche is fear.
In Asia, the dominant psyche is hope.
In the islamic world, the dominant psyche is humiliation.
She nailed it. Absolutely right.
Of course, if your time in the Phils consists of short visits for the purpose of as much commercial sex as possible, then you never get to meet real filipinos, never get any feel for the real country, never get to understand the nature of a very nice people. You only ever get to see the underbelly.
For your consideration.
