Anisabel Hotel and Mamu's Restaurant
we ate dinner at henny's this evening, together with some friends, one of whom mentioned that he had just visited davao's newest hotel. since he told us that both the hotel and the restaurant were quite upscale, it piqued my interest, and, since it's only a kilometer or so from the gate of my community, it was easy enough to swing by for a short visit.
anisabel is a small hotel, of about 20 rooms, on bacaca road, in rolling hills. it's about 5 kms. north of rizal st. and about a ten minute ride. it was built by a local architect and it's quite attractive. all of the rooms appear to face a large central courtyard. the most expensive accommodation is a "suite" room, which is actually a single bedroom, quite large, with a queen-sized bed, plasma, wall-mounted tv, and a very large bathroom with a shower stall that's big enough for two and perhaps for three. it's furnished in minimalist style, but very nice, with hardwood floors, ample lighting and free wireless internet, both in the rooms and throughout the hotel. the list price of the suite room is php2750 and it's certainly worth it.
the deluxe room is smaller, but still fairly large, also with queen-size bed, large bathroom/shower stall, and plasma tv. it's furnished in the same style, and also offers free wireless internet. the list price of the room is php2250. the price of both types of rooms includes breakfast.
mamu's is the hotel restaurant. it's very well done, with white linen table cloths, decent glassware, and large, cushioned chairs. the menu is fairly eclectic, and largely a mix of local and european dishes. i did not sample the food, but prices seemed reasonable, ranging from about php200.php350 per entree, with starters proportionately priced. there are also dining tables--furnished with the typical cheap white plastic chairs that are ubiquitous here--rep001tered around the courtyard.
the staff whom i met were courteous and appeared eager to please, though i did not eat there so i really don't know anything about the service.
the young lady who showed me the rooms and the menu said that guests seem to like the place because of the privacy that it offers, and i can believe that. it's not far from the center of town but it's certainly not centrally located, and there's no chance someone whom you do not want to see is going to stumble on it by accident. also, all of the rooms are accessible (or so it appeared) only through a central courtyard which is in turn only accessible through the front entrance of the hotel. therefore, it would be difficult for unwanted visitors to sneak in.
the hotel is only two stories so there's no elevator. all in all, i was impressed. it's much nicer--though it does not have a pool--than galleria and the other boutique hotels i've seen here. we will try the restaurant next week and i'll try to remember to report back on the quality of the food. i did forget to ask to see the wine list which was a definite oversight on my part.
changing topics rather abruptly, someplace else, next to henny's was more packed than i have ever seen it. i also noticed three or four truly stunning women coming into the place as i was leaving. each was wearing a black cocktail dress and, though they seemed to be with friends, they did not appear to be with serious man-type friends.

Guys do the Research first. Then Ask Questions
Cuba Tourist,
You ARE a newcomer here. You need to scan back through Posts here and also the original Davao Board from mid 2006 back to October 2003(before I came on there was nothing).
If the Kid were my Son I would have killed myself years ago. END OF STORY. He is my nephew. His mother is one of my three much older sisters. He is basically an underachiever in a Family with a History of Over Achieving Men. For reasons I can only describe as insane he attended the same private, extremly expensive/exclusive mens high school where both I and my brother attended and excelled academically and in sports. In four years there the Kid played zero sports and barely graduated. He then proceeded to live in my parents home for the next fifteen years, getting his fucking head together.
He excels at two things: Drinking (shots and beers is his motto) and Smoking. He is with NYPD as an Officer and has maxed out his upward advancement as a Patrol Officer. It was my collosal mistake to bring him to the Philippines and proceed to "call in favors" and "fix him up" with at least 30 filipinas age 18-28. To do this required assistance from my Son's (yes MY SON) Mother who introduced him to 5 or 6 MD's, Nurses, X-Ray Techs and Lab Techs at the Hospital where she is on Staff. I also had my Daughter and her beautiful Mother find dates for him with filipinas age 18-21 on the Island where I have a second home.
If you toss enough mud at a wall, eventually some will stick. His success ratio with filipinas was 5%, contrast this with my 85-90%. But he is very obese, dresses like a slob, smokes 2-3 packs of marlboros each day and consumes countless "shots & beers" daily. Eventually, two of the women I set him up with began to date him. Guys please DO NOT ask me to "assist" you. Got it???
"No good dead will go unpunished". I used to have that statement hanging on my kitchen wall years ago. It holds true here. The kid is an offish guy with no class or "social polish". He has "torpoed me with women three times during his forays to the Philippines. This is why I no longer meet guys visiting here. I have a very good thing going in Davao City (and Cebu City). Ne need for a cockblocker or wannabe "ladiesman" trying to fuck up my situation.
