Brothel in Phnompen especially at the places where it looks like a shop house with part of the door is close is stealing your money. Boom boom cost at this place will cost you around 15 to 20 usd.
We initially did not realise this and thought that we have overspend it some where else. So we put a trap and really count our money before going for a boom boom. True enought, whey you are scre*** the girl or when the girl give you a massage ( with you head down facing the pillow ), someone from outside will open the door and will go thru you wallet. They will always leave some money behind in order for you not to be suspicious.
So guys - be extra carefull when you doing your bussiness at this brothel. You have been warned. It is safe to bring just enought money for the tuk tuk + boom boom and return. Or hold to your money in your hand while your boom boom the girl.

it's one reason i pack light and am ready to move with my 1 duffel luggage. case in point, there was this one time i took a khmer girl from sharky's back to the room and she seemed nice although she refused bj and then when leaving i gave her $10. she insisted that short-time was $20 and i told her it was $10. she then proceeded to tell me how i gave her friend $20. i replied with the fact that her friend did yum-yum and also let me take pictures (which this girl refused). after another futile attempt she realized i'm a pro too so she made a face and left but i noticed that when outside my room she looked up at my room number for a few seconds before she left.
i sighed and just packed my bag and moved to another nearby hotel. no use griping about shit like this. just consider it common sense.

no need to be phobic paranoid but just have some common street sense and stay safe. tourists are considered pinatas. better to be hit for $10-20 than hit for $1000-2000.
lesson on cambodian police. it a purchased position so they ave to pay a few hundred to a few thousand dollars to get the job. they are paid like $50 a month. so how do they make money? . they stop people on the street to claim violations and fine them. $. wealthy khmer pay (bribe) cops to do muscle work for them which at times is throwing people off their farm and claiming it as their own (land-grabbing). $$. someone wants to report a crime. they have to pay the cops to look into it. $. by some grace of god they catch someone they think is the culprit. the accused's family pays (bribes) the cops to let him go $$$.
i don't really use the word bribe since i have to wonder can you call it a bribe if it's part of their standard method of salary?
with all this said. the khmer people are generally good people and i have several very good khmer friends. its the officials that are the corrupt ones unfortunately.

one long time classic in sex-tourist circles, phnom penh the capital of cbs "cambodia beggar state" is always sure to please. it has everything: short time joints, dirt shit, gore. whatever you want. it is overwhelming, noisy, arrogant but never boring. guaranteed! i personally found out in a unique way on this trip. apart from the sex there is not much to do, except maybe strolling around town and trying to avoid the hateful motos. at the end of the day, trying to wash off all the dirt, crap and shit from your clothes and feet will also fill a fair amount of time.
the "beggar state of cambodia" is geographically well blessed and visually pleasing. it has a blossoming tourist industry, well based on "dead rocks and dead bones", apart from the lucrative trade of living female flesh. it's only problem is that it is inhabited by cambodians who when not busy annoying tourists, enjoy robbing each other silly and littering dirt around. don't blame me, this is what i observed. tell us if it isn't so and why not. however, apart from these negatives, the sex is good. all you need to do is avoid the cambodians and concentrate on the guest vietnamese workers. are they pretty! and they have culture too.

arriving at phnom penh airport, you can purchase cambodian tourist visas for the prescribed $20 fee. there is a slow moving queue but few hassles. the airport now has a tourist bus that runs to downtown. apart from that a moto costs $2-3, and a taxi $7. arriving by land, the town has several bus transport companies, each one with it's own terminal. luckily, most (but not all) are found around the central market (psar tmey).
here moto taxi drivers will throng you, but a fare to one of the many hotels nearby shouldn't be more than 50c or so (2000 riels). there is also one daily boat arriving from siem reap (angkor ruined tourist gimmick town). for connections to battambang and thailand, see separate recent postings in "other areas" chapter.

3. / accomodation, food, money, etc
official currency is the cambodian riel. closely fixed to the usd, around the rate of $1=4000riel. however, usd notes are generally accepted everywhere, even by beggars. (they prefer the larger notes). beggars also take large usd notes with small tears in them, however other shops do not. so it is worth to examine your change. changing money is easy, either at market money changers, jewellery shops, minimarts and many other places. phnom penh is overwhelmed by accomodotation choices.
a basic fan room starts from $5 and a simple but comfortable aircon from $15. looking around the central market area is a good start. especially streets #118, 130, 136 etc. yes, most streets are numbered so easy to handle by the mathematically minded. a few of them have names also. many khmer restaurants do not have english menus and do not welcome foreigners, unless they speak khmer. this limits your choices in terms of price, as tourist restaurants charge 2-3 times as much for exactly the same dishes. still, it's reasonably inexpensive to dine well. about $5-8 for a dinner with one drink, per person. the central sorya shopping center has an inexpensive foodhall and psar olympic has many cheap noodleshops in the evenings.

4. / entertainment and sex venues in phnom penh
this used to be much better years ago. phnom penh's famous sophie club bj joint seem to have closed down recently (at least i haven't seen their ads for a while), which is a great loss. what is left is a couple of foreigner oriented st knocking shops, the ever growing multitude of female-chat bars (not recommended) and the traditional khmer/viet brothels. the good old peaceful times of k11 long gone, and now you must be very aware when visiting these. as foreigners seem to be welcome only to the extent of robbing them. haven't heard of anyone getting killed yet, however this might follow sometime. of course, it seems this is the result of pushing the trade underground.
taking it out of the hands of honest businessmen and throwing it to the dogs of maffia. beware, beware, it seems wherever the cops step in, the dirt will just grow uncontrollably. it would be much more sensible to legalize the trade and end the troubles. yes, that does might not fit in with the armed police of course who might suspect their business being cut in effect. what a world this is (and i not only mean cambodia)!

i was sort of unbelieving but did stop raging. she made one call on her mobile. one young khmer boy came with my wallet. mamasan (that old woman) in english, asked me to count it if it was all there. i looked inside. there was some bath, dollars and euros but i didn't actually know how much i had. so, only answered that "i don't know". i got dressed. then remembered my $10 that i paid for the fuck, which was aborted. mama gave that $10 back from her own purse. i handed her $3 and said a vague "thankyoo" for her help. than she examined my injuries (some minor scratches) and said goodbye. i walked out and left that fucking joint.

i wasn't really devastated. rather felt euphoric. wow, how exciting! it is like the movies, except for real! beats watching bruce willis shooting dead 200 men like himself within 2 hours. back in the hotel i added up the amounts i changed, etc and it seems all i had lost was about $25 + 1000b. amazing! for the price of two cinema tickets plus popcorn, i got all this real excitement. i would do it again. things like this give real spice to your trip.
and really there was no harm done. apart from the approx $55. but that's entertainment money. cheaper than a bad, impersonal fuck in pattaya. or a lot cheaper than the $60 i gave to the doctor to sew my head together in thailand some time before. i did not regret those. why should i regret this one? this one's a winner. try it for yourself! recommended. i marked it on the map below.

to be honest this one was the very first of this kind of incident in 10 years of visiting cambodia. it is just losing $5/year. hardly worth the sweat. so, continued walking around the small streets of #154, 136 and side alleys. there are so many chicken shops everywhere. all pretty and inviting. just this language issue is in the way. without communication there is no trust. how can we do business with these khmer gentlemen? eventually made it to the circee/mikado area on #136 street.
sat down at mikado. all kambos here but some attractive. chose a cute young one. fuck, in the room turned out she had a kid. only the face was pretty. but service is still good, and one of the nicest, friendliest khmer females i ever met. we also watched some stupid porn which was something to fill the time after the root. just cuddling up on the bed. $15 total inc room +2 for drink. cheaper and better than pattaya. this was all the action for the first day. needless to say, i had a rotten sleepless night. replaying the events again and again. but still exciting. not ordinary or boring.
my fault, i simply grew careless after so many good times and many years. but good fun, nevertheless.

had to get a haircut (still have a few white strands left around the back). i usually i pay $1 in phnom penh. nowadays however nearly every barber in the central area has added to their list in english: "foreigner $2". what da fuck is that? welcome idiots, we love you? it is not the money but the bad feeling. had to walk far to find one for $1. 25. normal price, only khmer pricelist. as i said, it is not the money.
who will explain to them that you cannot just jack up the price without jacking up the service too. of course they cannot speak english. just point. look, "foreigner $2". excuse me, what if in the us a barbershop would charge $10 for everyone for a haircut, except $20 for khmers? every year the less i like these people. if it wasn't for the beautiful viets, i would never come back.
*** walkabout pick-up bar ***
after this sat down at the famous walkabout hotel. price of draft beer used to be an easy $1. now 1. 25. this place is real easy to find. right next to the "chip lay hotel" (really! ) which is across the road from "girl style" beautysalon. early afternoon, various quality of women. as expected, the men actually talk to them here as equals. one spoiled young khmer female comes over and offers a "short-time" for $20. plus she seems to expect me to court her too.
yes girl, move on. to your boyfriend who spoiled you. last time i paid $6 here for st. a year or two ago. another older viet woman is much nicer, real friendly. at her age must be. one joy is that age humbles all women. but i really did not come to kanbo and put up with all the shit, just to root oldies.
