Thanks so much for this information. Making my first visit to Thailand on Dec 16-26. This is exactly what I was looking for. Question do you think its best to use the ATM everyday or come into the country with all the cash I expect to need ( 2000 USD) and do a one time exchange? I know my bank charges for other ATM usage, just don't want to get into the habit of withdrawing money several times a day like I tend to do in Vegas.
And the Thai bank who owns the ATM also charges you for each withdrawal (150 Baht, if I remember well). So I arrive "in country" with some cash that I change at the airport. Not the best rates, but I exchange only enough to tide me over the time until I find a better rate or can withdraw some larger amounts. Hotels and fancy restaurants are settled with a credit-card, so the cash money of for small things and P4P and hence I usually withdraw cash money once a week only.

Keep these in the safe in your hotel room (make sure your hotel offers this service). Some ATMs have a maximum amount of 10 000 baht. So avoid these brands.

It has been 150 baht for each ATM transaction so I would take out enough for a few days at least,

Also check what exchange rate you are getting, some places are better than others,

You should be able to get a pretty good rate even at the airport. Right now the rates is around 30. 79, at the ATM you might get 30. 63 with a ATM charge of 150 baht for each transaction and most likely in general you will be charged 1% at home? It should also be noted that most USA bank will only distribute $500. 00 maximum a day (24hour period). Right now based on the rate I could get 16, 000 baht. As noted some ATM here in Thailand will only give you 10, 000 baht and if you are asking for more the machine doesn't give you much of a explanation which can be disturbing if you ever got ripped off by a ATM here?

Bring the cash and have extra in your ATM account in case there is a emergency?

Do not change significant money at the airport, only enough to get to where you are going. Bring some $20's for that. The exchange rates will be better at the money changers at your destination.

SunLover
I believe that you get a better rate for the 100 bills? Do whatever you need to get a better rate but don't be obessed about it. I still remember a guy walking in the hot sun in Bangkok because he thought he could get a better rate on a Thai broom. He walked his ass off and his shirt was nearly soak in the back and he felt he beat the guy because he got the broom for 35 baht instead of 40 baht. While he was walking away from me I was thinking how can I know such a stupid F-ker? And today he still does the same thing and over pays for pussy?

Pulled a cute young thing from the line-up dancing on stage in between the shows. #29 her name was Tam. Bought her a drink and started chatting. One mama-san warned me that Tam's English was not very good. I didn't care I wasn't looking for a conversation partner. She had a nice body with soft skin. I asked her how old she was and she said 18. Wow, I thought. Less than half my age. I was started to get very excited. Asked her for long time and she agreed. She called a different mama-san over who said barfine was 600 baht and long time was 3000 baht. After a week in Patong Beach where I was getting long time for 2000 baht or less I was a little reluctant but when I looked at that body again the wrong head made the decision and I agreed. Walked with her along beach road back to my hotel. About a 10 minute walk but just spent the time looking at her long legs and talking a little. Made it to the hotel and the front desk staff seemed like they were waiting for me. So I walked up with her and they asked for her I'd. Now, before I paid the barfine I double checked with the mama-san that 1) she was 18 and 2) she had I'd. The mama-san said "Yes, yes, everything fine. She have I'd." I said,"I don't want any problems with my hotel she has to have I'd." "No problem", she said,"she has I'd." So get to the front desk and no I'd is forth coming. An exchange in Thai back and forth between Tam and the desk staff and one of the clerks turns to me and says "She has no I'd. She can't go up to your room."

I looked at Tam and asked,"What happened?" She just looked down at the floor and said "Sorry." So we headed back out to beach road and grabbed a baht bus back to Walking Street. I already had a suite with a bath tub on the balcony. I wasn't going to go pay for some dirty short time room somewhere. I wanted to return her to the club and get my money back. We get back to the club and I tell one of the waitresses that I want to see a mama-san. They find the same one that I paid the barfine to. The same one that assured me Tam had I'd and everything was fine. I said,"She doesn't have I'd." They talked in Thai. Tam looked like she was about to die. I guess I was causing her to lose face, but I just wanted to know what the hell was going on. Mama-san looked straight at me and said "She have I'd but she can't show it to your hotel because she is 16 and they won't let her in." "She's 16?" I looked at Tam,"You're 16?" No response from her. I told the mama-san I wanted my money back. She ran over to the bar and returned with my 600 baht and said something in Thai to Tam while gesturing at the stage. I guess she was probably telling her to go change and get back to work. I looked right at the mama-san after Tam walked away and said "If she had told me she was 16 I wouldn't have bar fined her." The mama-san just turned her head and looked away without saying anything.

They know she's 16. They don't care. They're pushing child prostitution.

I went back to my hotel and thanked the front desk staff for saving my ass.

PS Why does this editor change the short from for identification from two letters I and D to I'd? What is the point of that?

If a girl tells you she is 18, she invariably is only 17, and in her 18th year. Let the buyer beware!

Fantastic report. Well done

similar thing happened to me once in bangkok. had pulled this cutie from one of the go-gos at nana plaza, we had gone for a few drinks and it had gotten quite late and we went back to my hotel. when she is signing into the hotel the reception tells me that she can't come in. i ask "why, she has shown you her id?" and then they say "sir, she can't come in because she is 16". was to late to march back to the go-go since it was after closing time, so waved my finger in front of her face and told her "no good, bad, bad, bad. you understand how much trouble i could be in?" she started crying and ran out of the hotel. made a point of thanking the receptionist for keeping me out of what could potentially have been a lot of trouble for me. was really irritated actually since i avoid girls that say they are exactly 18, since that is often a sign of them being ****, but this one had said she was 21.

managed to find an open beer bar where i pulled a girl from that was far from my first choice of bed companion, but only had two weeks in thailand on that trip and was not planning on going to bed alone any night.

was determined to go back the next day and recover my bar fine, but the next night i realised i had no recollection whatsoever of which go-go she worked in, and wasn't going to waste a whole night looking for her, so wrote it of to experience.

I was last in Thailand about 6 years ago. Are costs roughly the same? 500 bht short term. 1000 overnight? Can I get a cheap, but clean, motel for under $10 a night? I am planning on a trip in feburary.

Thanks

Thanks
Why don't you read the forum and find out? You have had 6 years to read the posts on this Forum. I see 80-90% of your previous posts are questions only.

Thanks
If you don't mind a bit of negotiating with the girls and do not go for the high end of the market (a gogo girls and such) it should still be possible, but you will really have to search for it. Beach road freelancers and beergarden girls are your best bet then. A more realistic price would be 750 baht ST and 1500 baht LT.

A hotel for under $10 a night might actually be more difficult to find, unless you go in the low season.
