I don't think the scene has gotten worse necessarily, it just depends on the day, sometimes fantastic, sometimes not.

I'm back in town after six months hard at work in the States. There are some questions about FLs in Bangkok, so here are some points I picked up last summer, and which continue these days (based upon my first full night on Sat night).

By FL, I'm talking about the girls who frequent clubs or SWs (not entirely distinct sets, but relatively little overlap). As someone posted recently, walking up and down Sukhumvit after midnight will reveal a great deal of potential. Last night, on my way home at 5:15am, the taxi came down Suk and I saw perhaps two dozen girls between Soi Nana and Soi 11. Of those two dozen, perhaps four were serious head-turners.

But on to the point of my report - nightclubs. There is a well established trifecta of scenes in BKK for the girls to head to - this information was given to me by a girl in the summer time who was a seasoned veteran of the night scene in BKK. This at the tender age of 26. There actually is a fourth, but that one sucks IMHO, so I wont count it in the trifecta (otherwise I would need to figure out what the corresponding word is for four). The trifecta is as follows:

(Bed Supper Club)
Spice Club (now Climax)
Spicey
Bossy

So Bed Supper Club is the one that I dislike. It is on Soi 11, just past Climax. It is a weird building, made out of sheet metal, with translucent walls so you can see the throbbing neon lights from inside. I hate this place, actually, since it is full of white guys wearing linen shirts and overly gelled heads. No offense to white guys, or those who like gel, but when you have a large number of similar looking people, and you don't fit in, you are not likely to enjoy yourself there. The girls in there know what kind of crowd goes there, so I got no interest at all. By the way, I am brown skinned, dark haired, early-thirties, athletic, American. But I am not caucasian.

Climax is on Soi 11, in the Ambassador hotel. It opens sometime before midnight, but does not get going until around midnight (probably a little later than that). I like getting there early (midnight), grabbing a table with a view (and where I can be seen) and just watching the talent. It gives me the power to choose, rather than walking into a full room of eye balls on your back, if you know what I mean. Climax goes until 2am on weeknights, and 4am on weekends. I have heard that the police are cracking down, but I can tell you that Climax was roaring at 3am yesterday.

The girls at Climax are a mix of straight-up working girls (many of the pool hall girls from Gullivers go here after midnight or so), semi-professionals, and real-life girls looking for some fun and some cash on the side. Each has its own charms - the pool hall girls are a little dodgy since they all talk to each other, and so once you are with one of them, it is really hard to try another. Not impossible, but hard. The semi-professionals are a good group, since they don't have any hangups, and they are not as organized as the poolhall girls. And the amateurs are hit and miss - if you catch a star fish, then you are in for a tough night, but you could just as easily get a firecracker, which has happened to me on many occasions, making it well worth the gamble.

The gentlemen here are a mix, more so than Bed Supper Club. The preponderance of ethnicities, I would say, is caucasian, but there are enough other ethnicities to make anyone feel comfortable. There are usually a couple of black guys (no more than that though), a couple of Indians, and a couple of Arabs. Then there are the various mixed ethnicities, mestizo if you will. The age range is from 18 to death, with the median probably around 32, 33.

Once Climax closes, the girls who are still looking (or partying) head to Spicey. This place is down Sukhumvit past MBK, turn left around a block past MBK, then a few minutes winding through alleys. The taxi will drop you off in a spot where the more safety-oriented amongst us would think twice about getting out, but it's ok. The area is dark, there are a dozen or so Thai males walking around menacingly. But when you get out, one of the menaces opens the door for you and says in surprisingly good English 'welcome to Spicy night club'.

Oh, thanks dude, that makes me feel better. So you are led through what looks like someones open-roof garage and into a dingy small room with a counter. You pay your 300B entry (which gets you one drink), and in you go. Alternatively, if there is a group of you, you could buy a Johnny Walker and that gets five people in, and you get treated like a high roller. The JW costs $1200B (I think, maybe 1500B?), so you lose nothing.

The room itself is dark and smokier than Climax. The gentlemen here are a little less gentle than at Climax. The mix of ethnicities is decidedly darker, and the feel of the club is a lot grittier, rougher. I was there last night and I saw two fights involving punches and broken bottles. Not to scare you, but that kind of thing does not happen at Climax all that often. Just so you know, they have a zero tolerance policy for fighting. If you are involved, whether you are the instigator or the victim, you get tossed by a goon who has hands the size of my flat-screen tv - I mean they are huge frikkin hands. He reaches over and puts them around the back of the fighting pup's neck, and as soon as that happens, the fighter realizes how huge these hands are, and he amazingly stops struggling and falls limp, as if knowing that to resist hands like these would be futile. It's worth going just to see this guys hands, really.

The girls are a mix too, but there is definitely talent on display here. The club has a looser feel, and so the girls are a little less conservative than at Climax. I think Climax is like a softer, gentler version of Spicy. It starts earlier, the girls are a little more prissy, the guys don't get into fist fights. I arrived at Spicy at 1:30 on a Sat night, and it was positively depressing. The room was around 1/3 full, about 60% girls, all looking at me (which is a nice thing). But it is really hard to get any action going when the room is this empty. I thought I was in for a dead night, but it worked out ok. See my next post for that.

The third club is Bossy, which is in the Pratunam area. This place is thought of as the after-Spicy club. Spicy is supposed to close at 4am, but last night I was there until just past 5am - maybe weekends it is open earlier. Bossy is a cool place- perhaps my favorite of all three. It has a rough feel to it, like Spicy, but somehow it is more glitzy. You pay the same cover charge, and when you walk in, you are on an elevated platform where you get a view of the stage to the right, and the dancing mass of bodies right in front of you. There is an elevated seating area against one wall, which seems like a pointless place to be. But you can walk through the crowd, look for your poison, circle a couple of times, and then return to the general vicinity of the girl you picked out and try to work your magic. The crowd here is also mixed, with enough brownies and blackies to make a guy like me comfortable, and enough whities to make any ethno-phobes comfortable. It is still a white-dominated crowd, but it doesn't blind the eye, so to speak. Sorry to be this graphic with the ethnic descriptions, but a lot of people wonder about these things, and so I am just trying to be descriptive. No offense to anyone.

This place goes late, although I have never been there when they closed. I have always managed to snag some little lovely and head on back to the hotel well before closing.

One more thing: I *think* that if you take a cab with more than two people in it to Bossy, you do not need to pay the cabbie, since the club will pay him. That's an added perk.

Beer Garden stays open late but I have rarely seen a decent looking girl there at night (and not many during the day).

Most of the girls were already there with dudes, and the ones that weren't were sitting with their friends not looking too approachable. Saw a few cute ones in the beer garden, but nothing that really pulled me.

I don't really like the setup at these places, with everyone sitting down. It's too much like bars back in the US, where you have to awkwardly approach a girl sitting with her friends. They'd be much more enjoyable if people were standing walking around mingling.

New Wave I stayed in for about 45 seconds. It was just a bunch of pool tables.

Thermae I went at 8:30 so it was still empty. Might try it again.

Also tried the two Hillary bars on Soi Nana. Again, more guys than girls and the girls weren't that interested or interesting.

Only talked to about 3 girls total from all of these places.

Ended up back at the gogos in Soi Cowboy. Got another girl who was supposed to be a short timer and was still in my bed at noon the next day. Left easily after that though. Sweet girl.

Very nice post Kumbu - informative, well written. My problem is that I just can't make it for those kind of hours any more. Once you hit 50 something chemical kicks in and you want to be tucked in by some cutie by 2am!

It is one of the great questions that all my freelancer fan friends ask each other and no one has come with a good answer. I think it started at Nana. First the disco fell out of favor and that had a knock-on effect on the parking lot that is a pittance of what it used to be. You also had the cops arresting the girls there - whether at the behest of the Nana Hotel mgt I am not sure - and so what had been the best early FL location just dried up. So where did they go? I don't know! Certainly not to the other FL joints in the area. The ones I know from the old days pretty much began going to the late night discos - the places Kumbu talks about. Others I know migrated to Pattaya, Koh Samui and Phuket. Others got taken out of the game by sponsors, babies, boyfriends etc. That of course was always going on - the difference is that there are not a lot of new young pretty ones replacing them. Again why not? Really no idea. People were forecasting that the bad economy would drive hordes of girls into the biz but I saw no evidence of that. In fact the bad economy has driven some girls back to the village where living is cheap because they were getting so little business from customers and the ones they did were all low-balling them.

Maybe new girls prefer the security of establishments now - beer bars, massage parlors and go-go places - where they at least get a salary (if they bring in some business) and are not hassled by the cops. Maybe there are just fewer girls coming into the sex trade - a trend that nearly every country goes though as it develops economically and becomes more of a global player. All I know is that the fl scene is probably 20% of what it was 10 years ago and 35% of what it was 5 years ago and 50% of what it was 2 years ago. It has been a steady decline in both quantity and quality in Bangkok.

Ronin, I agree with you Re: the fatigue factor. I'm no spring chicken any more, and I do have difficulty dealing with sleeping at 6am. I don't do it often, but when I do, I go whole hog. The beauty of it is that after you have met a beauty who floats your boat in one of these places, and you get her number, when that mid-week urge arrives, you can call her up, take her out to a nice dinner, ply her with some wine and wine cooler, take her back, do the beautiful thing for a couple of hours and still be tucked away before 1am. So you can think of the late-night jaunts as laying the foundation to later, easier lays.

So as my last post indicated, I arrived at Spicy at 1:30 am to a scene that was not worth the trek out there. I ended up watching Everton kick Citeh's ass on the big screen. There were a couple of cuties dancing on the stage which offered the occasional groin tingle, but not more than that. They were very, very young, like 19-ish, which is a definite no-no for old Kumbu. I'm not that old. But a girl that young is going to have a tight, sexy body and not know a damned thing about using it to pleasure you. So it is not worth the effort.

Some cute girls off to the left were eyeballing me, but with no intention to advance. And a late-thirties fatty in front of me kept trying to make googly eyes with me. I fended off the ocular advances with mild acknowledgment followed by confirmed indifference. That kept her at bay. She was with a smokin hot girl, curly brown hair, beautiful eyes, gentle porcelain skin, and long striking legs. Mmmph, I wouldn't mind a piece of that pie. But some pit boss with a Spicy shirt came over and poured himself a drink from their stash of Johnny Walker, which means the girl was his. I ain't crossing the pit boss, that's for sure.

I noticed a white guy to my left wearing a baseball cap and dancing all funny-like, trying to blend in and seem like he was not self-conscious. But of course he was. This guy we shall label Goofy, for reasons that will become apparent later on. So Goofy kept approaching girls and trying to dance with them. The girls, bless their hearts, would entertain him for 60 seconds or so, so as to allow him to save some face, and then firmly reject his advances. Dude, it was painful to watch, but he kept trying. I figured he would eventually hit pay dirt, but sadly, it ended badly for Goofy. More on that later.

Also to my left was a lone Indian guy. He looked really out of place. He was middle aged (maybe 45ish?), hair combed with a part on the left side, bespectacled, wearing khakis and a long sleeved shirt. He looked uncomfortable, and alone, and I feared his night would end that way.

A variety of other characters were around, none worth mentioning at this point. Anyway, I watched as Mancini winced and grimaced at the neckless Bellamy's antics (sorry City fans), and rejoiced when the final whistle went, thinking that my Gunner's third place is more and more safe at this point. Not that third place is where we will end up - we WILL be champions this season, despite the 7-1 thumping Chelski put down on The Bruce. Ok, sorry, I digress, but that is just to show you that there really was not much happening for a good long time - enough to watch an entire second half of football. (Yes, I am American, and I love the EPL - I strive to break stereotypes).

So the game ends and I look around, and by this time it is 2:30am. Boy, this place really filled out. The room was around 70% full now, and there was a definite vibe to the place. Goofy was still bumping around trying to get the same four or five girls to go with him, except he was now doubly drunk, and staggering a little. The Indian dude was seated at the same table, perhaps not having moved a muscle in the last 45 minutes, with an awkward circle of empty space around him (why was no one near him??). Meanwhile, the table behind me had been filled by some people, and I noticed the girl behind me started to dance close to me. She kept nudging me a little with her elbows, rubbing the small of her back against me every so lightly. I peaked over to see if it would be worth reciprocating (don't want to get entangled with a godzilla), and what I saw was pleasant. Not over-the-top fantastic, but quite pleasant. The girl was wearing tight jean shorts, revealing superb legs (I am a definite leg man). She had a leopard-print sleeveless top on, revealing a somewhat flat chest (not a problem for me), and a face that would probably be 6 on the Kumbumeter. Given the late hour, I thought I should get started, so I waited until she bumped me again, and I turned in as non-threatening manner as I could. She was ready for me, and she motioned for me to join her dancing.

So up I went, careful not to move in too quickly - there's nothing worse than Mr.Gropy. But before I had a chance to swing a hip, her hand went onto my shoulder, wrapped around the back of my neck, and her hips ground into mine. Umm, hello?

Her eyes were closed, so I took this opportunity to do a quick look-over, kick the tires so to speak. Her legs were really superb - well shaped, lengthy enough, nice skin. Her skin was a little dark, which is great because given the functioning of Thai society, it meant she was a little low on self confidence - perfect for a shark like myself. Her face was very...angular. Very high cheek bones, a prominent chin, large wide eyes, angled upwards - a very striking face indeed. Many people might think of her as odd looking, but she looked really quite pretty to me. And I knew this was in the light of the nightclub, so everything looks better. But knowing that, I still approved.

She said nothing to me for 10 minutes, until she leans in and motions for me to bend down so she can tell me something. I was expecting something like 'My name is...' or 'I'm tired, you want to go back to your hotel room together?' But instead, she said 'I'm...REEEEEAAALLLY....drunk....'

Mmm, ok. She was too. She was tipping over, leaning into me and resting her head on my chest, eyes rolling back in her head, phew. But in the meantime, she would turn around and grind her ass into my cock as shamelessly as I could have ever imagined. But after the fifth or sixth time, he finally got a little angry, and as he stumbled away from us in rejection, he stumbled a little heavier than he should have into an angry Arab-looking guy. This guy was in his mid-twenties, wiry but definitely not afraid to fight. In a flash, the Arab punches Goofy right in the jaw. Pop, screams, shuffling, and suddenly the flashlights from the bouncers were everywhere.

Nobody could figure out what happened, and nobody was telling the bouncers who did what, but they knew someone did something. Goofy was wailing about how he had been popped in the jaw, and the Arab was shouting obscenities while being held back by his girl (his girl? Really?).

So here's the lesson, gentlemen. The gorgeous girl who was 'with me', i.e., the one who Goofy kept hassling - she quietly walks over to the head bouncer, whispers something in his ear. He points his flashlight into Goofy's eyes, and she nods. The bouncer lifts his flashlight, points it into Goofy's face, and with his other hand, points to Goofy. Then, from behind the crowd, emerged the man with the hands. His gigantic hands were obviously his only asset. He reminded me of Jaws from the early 1980s James Bond movies - he had these metal teeth, and that's all he was good for. This guy had hands the size of a Mini Cooper, and that was his means of livelihood. He pushed though the crowd and approached Goofy, who had been marked by the boss. Goofy was being held by three other bouncers, but he was squirming and wiggling trying to tell them that he got hit, and he did not hit anyone. They were hearing none of it. But his wriggling and squirming got feverishly high, getting more intense as The Hands approached.

The right hand reached out, around the back of Goofy's neck, and as the pressure tightened down around the neck, Goofy went limp. I mean, he totally went limp, like he knew there was nothing he could do - resistance is futile. They led Goofy out like that, never to be seen or heard from again. The lesson - don't fuck with anyone in a place like this. The gorgeous girl could easily have stayed out of it, but Goofy was an irritant, and she did what needed to be done to expel the irritant from her environment. Whether it was just or not, Goofy was tossed because he bothered the wrong lady.

Everyone was kind of stunned. The music was going through all of this, and everyone started dancing soon thereafter. My girl was a little depressed by it all, but we soon got back to the grind. The music went, she gyrated, and I groped, that's how the next hour went by.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the Indian guy still in his location, same drink in front of him, no one around him. Poor guy.

Then at around 4am, another fight broke out - this time with a bottle being broken on someones head. So come 4:30, my girl's friends get tired. They decide they want to bail. I'm looking at my girl (I don't even know her name actually), who I really do want to bone, but who is drunk out of her mind. I needed to make a decision. She was clearly waiting to go home with me. But did I want to do that? On the one hand, drunk can be good. Girls will do shit they never would while sober. But THIS drunk is not a good thing. She could get home and pass out - very likely in my opinion. And then there was the thing the girl friends kept saying - 'we've never seen her do this before'. That troubled me. I got the feeling that once I got her back home, me horny as hell, her drunk as hell, she would suddenly clam up and become scared and frightened.

So I decided to bail. I told her I needed to work the next day (Sunday???), and took her number. Only then did I discover her name. And I ran out of there as quickly as I could. Sounds like a bummer, but read on.

On a happy note, as I was leaving, I spied out of the corner of my eye, the Indian guy being totally mauled by a frumpy young girl with an over-sized square head. He looked delighted, and she seemed to be having fun. That put a smile on my face. It took a while, but Indian dude got his freak on with someone. By the way, my description of him as an Indian dude should not in any way lead you to believe that all Indian dudes will have it this difficult. It was really his awkwardness that was the problem, not his ethnicity. I suppose I should have called him Awkward dude, but 'awkward' is a difficult word to type - try it. So I called him Indian dude.

I took the taxi back, and as we were going up Sukhumvit, I saw dozens of SWs. I got out at Soi 11 and doubled back, looking for one girl I saw near the (now closed) Starbucks. She had a purple dress on which was short, short short, revealing legs I could sink my teeth into (did I mention I am a leg man?) She was standing there, and as I approached, she seemed to know what had happened to me this night. She seemed sympathetic to my cause, and agreed immediately to go with me. Perhaps it was the soon-to-be-rising sun. We walked up to my hotel (took around 10 minutes) and we talked. She was charming, had some pretty good English. She was 27, one kid, from the South (although her skin was quite light), worked as a cell phone saleslady, did this for extra cash and some fun.

So, we got back to the hotel, she showered first, me next, when I got out she had crept beneath the covers. I slowly pulled the covers off, with some resistance, to reveal a slightly hefty belly, some stretch marks around the hips, but an overall very tasty looking after-dancing treat. We did the normal fair, lasting somewhere between 30 and 45 minutes (I was tired guys, come on). I should say that I did spend some time on those tasty legs, kissing, caressing, etc. She giggled and wiggled, but I had to have it. We then showered and slept. Woke up today at 11am, and to my surprise, she took me into her mouth without me even asking. Blew my load, we both showered together, and off she went. I paid her 1500B, which is probably above market rate, but she saved a potentially depressing night for me.

Good report and follow-up.

The word for four is quadrella and for five it is quinella (my grandfather was serious with betting on horse races in my youth).

I'd add a fifth: Q Bar, just around the corner from BedSup Club. It has a GREAT vodka bar and has always been lots of playful FLs there, even when I've been with the Thai gf.

Also there is Concept CM2 (think was called Spasso perhaps) at the Novotel on Siam Square, but I've not been there for a few years. There is a report a little way back on the action there and their Facebook page very active.

I've had a great time every time I've been to Spice club, and have always scored great performers. While it is a bit dark, a few circuits or a well positioned table has always paid dividends for me.

As for Q Bar and CM2 (and Spasso, actually), let me give you my two bits about those places.

Q Bar is indeed a cool joint to hang out at. It usually has some pretty little things willing to give you those oh so penetrating glances when you least expect it. And it closes early, so for you early nighters, this might be the trick. But in my experience (three times in the last year), the girls who you hook up with here are really not willing to call it a night when Q bar closes. They want to party, and Spice Club (Climax) is usually the next stop. And perhaps on from there. Plus Q bar is very small - maybe 100 people can fit in there max, right? And the cover is 500B, which is quite steep. So it's a good place to hang once in a while, but I would not say it is as reliable a joint as the other three I mentioned. You might go there first, with plans to hit Climax next.

Been to CM2 in the Novotel (Spasso is in the Hyatt, see below), and I did not like it much. The girls seemed far less attractive, and there is too much light in there. It makes the whole thing a little weird. Plus their band really sucks, I mean, really. So listening to that music all night long is just so tortuous that whatever lovely you end up with probably will only just cancel out the music.

And finally, Spasso. I have mixed feelings about this place. The clientèle are higher end than at other places, and the girls know this. As such, the girls typically expect 3000B or more. Six months ago I tried this place twice, both times with girls who were hot as hell in the summertime. They each asked for 5000B to begin with, and we negotiated down to 3000B. And the service was just so-so. 3000B for so-so service from a drop-dead gorgeous hottie...sounds like a gogo girl experience to me. Plus the band here is even worse than the one at CM2 (well, actually, it's a toss up).

So if I were coming to Bangkok for the first time, alone or in a group, looking for something other than the gogo bar experience, then I would do something like the following:

Climax at midnight...failing that,
Spicey at 2am...failing that
Bossy at 3:30am...failing that,
Sukhumvit for SWs...failing that,
Porn on my laptop, get a good nights sleep so I can repeat the next night.

I and as I can see many of the other writers here found it hard to find good summaries on Bangkok (that's why I wrote mine).

Definitely, by investing a lot of time you can go through the reports of distinction, but once there are hundreds of reports this is a challenge. All depends how much time you're willing to invest.

I experienced the same problem in many other very popular places, one good idea would be to open an additional section that only has summary reports. Many places already have something like this (see Bubba Boy's Brazil Forum that helped with with so many wonderful experiences in Brazil!) and I think those places are highly appreciated.

@Jackson: maybe you consider this idea. Not for every forum, but for the "overcrowded" places I believe it will help a lot and further improve your site.

i want to compliment once again g & s and the staff at ll, it is the most enjoyable place i have found for a working holiday. might not be everyone’s fancy, but i find it difficult to think about staying anywhere else once i am here.

Kumbu, thanks for your reports on the club scene. I have only just started exploring that side of BKK, and it's a nice alternative to the go-gos. I haven't been to any of the places you mention, but on my last trip in September I went to RCA (Hollywood) which I really liked. Didn't see many farang there, maybe just a handful or two including myself. I've passed by the Bed Supper Club on many occasions, and judging from the people waiting in line, your description of the clientele is right on the money. Although it's been around for quite a few years, it has this air of artificial or self-conscious hipness that I don't really dig. Nice exterior though. It's not that I mind cool places, I guess I'm just more a man of the people when it comes to going out. I'll be back in LOS for two weeks in mid-February, part work, part holiday, and if you're still around, how about hitting town together one night? I know not all are like this so it can be unfair. I was in Suzi 2 nights ago and was very full.
