One of the problems with Jakarta is it gets started quite late these days. 15 years ago, you could go to Top Gun at 6 pm and there were girls there already and plenty of guys there just after work having beers. Not anymore. Ever since My Bar came to Blok M, that drove the starting time to around 10 pm or later. It was one of the great losses to the area when My Bar opened it's doors. Not only did it drive Top Gun out of business, it drove the late-great Lintas Melawai out of business. Top Gun has since re-opened as a late night place with a band and has taken away most of My Bar's business. But back in the day, TG was the place to go right after work and that niche has never been replaced.

If you want to just have a few beers with the guys after work, you can go to Murphys pub in Kemang or maybe Eastern Promise in Kemang, but there won't be girls there to pick up. Aphrodite in Kuningan or Liquid exchange in Epicentrium are also places you can grab some beers early. If you want to have some nice girls to look at a little earlier, you can go to Malioboro. They have fun things going on by 6 pm. It's not really a place to hang out and chat with the guys though, it's a loud place with prostitutes and dancers. Any of the massage places like Delta will have lots of local guys just after work hanging out in the sauna area. If you are a foreigner, they love talking and will be glad to strike up a conversation.

Yes, what Smoothy said is spot on about the expat pub scene.

Also, I have found there are many places to go for a long lunch where Indo business people go or Indo lunching wives go, but your got to be with and Indo and going it alone won't really work IMHO (social house, potato head, loewry, union, skye). These are upper class bars / resto's, great for business lunches.

Or try Jalan Jaksa, a few bars there are open at midday, and get a regular customer group from at 3 pm onwards. Just be prepared to drink beer in the open (non Aircon) air with mozzies and papuans / international backpackers doing the same doing the same. If your a social kinda guy this can be a good afternoon to meet new people. I have spent many a good afternoon there dodgying work, in my business clothes and never had a problem. Always meet interesting characters to chat to.

Don't sweat the small stuff lads, the old dears providing security are very useful sources of information about fresh meat, who to avoid, leads to follow up and the latest gossip, and will throw in a good muscular massage as you're supping your pint too, paying them the security fee is a very modest investment compared to the high-value info you'll be getting in return, not to mention avoiding getting the name of being a "bule pelit / miskin". For myself I value my reputation higher than what amounts to spare change.

You'll be forking over the best part of two million in the course of a good night out, a four-dollar tip to keep the atmosphere pleasant and to let everyone know you're not a cheap charlie really shouldn't be a big concern to gentlemen of the world like us, should it?

You would go to the private curtained off booth, for a little lunch and desert and before the game could start, someone would come up and demand a drink claiming they were the " curtain girl".

I've thrown them some money for shoulder massages, but never any to provide security in the back room at Dee's. Then again, I don't partake in BJ's or sex in the back room at Dee's. The only girl back there who I find attractive is Anjani, and she has the personality of a soggy cigarette. Her sister was much nicer.

The problem is once you give one of them 50 k, then a whole bunch of others come up and ask for the same as if they are beggars (just for standing there idle doing nothing in a room with only one other guest sitting across the room).

I'd rather give it to one of the satpams outside, who probably earn a quarter of what these old hags make in tips every month. And these are the real ones doing a real job, because you can bet once a vicious fight between two bules breaks out inside the bar or a gang of thugs turn up outside, those old hags certainly won't be there doing their "security fee" duties.

If you asked one of them who to avoid or who to take I'm willing to bet they'll lie through their teeth and say whoever of the girls gave them a tip or she is on good terms with. Totally unreliable.

I heard that Dee's Place some 10 or 15 years ago didn't have any of that nonsense.

Mind you back in the day there was the odd gem in there especially if you popped in mid-afternoon and hit on one or two before they went to Falatehan.

[/QUOTE]I hear what you're saying but they aren't mutually exclusive, I always slip tips here and there occasionally to staff and bouncers, it's just a small gesture and costs very little but in payback terms it's very worthwhile if you are a long-term resident and a regular at a place. I would do exactly the same thing in my favourite bar at home.

As a recent example of pay back from the "security" ladies, well see the newest dancer on stage, the cute little one that still looks fresh-faced? She's 20 and has a baby and her husband is a deadbeat (wow no surprise there then). Anyway a week or two back the night before she started dancing she arrived in at about 9 pm in jeans and a sweater and her "security" lady mentor immediately brought her to me for an introduction. I bought her a drink (orange juice, always a sure sign they're newbies, within a week they're knocking back Long Islands) got chatting and we had her first private dance within 15 minutes. She was a bit shy and a bit awkward at first but security lady gave her all the advice she needed and soon everything was going smoothly.

Next night there she was in her leopard print hot pants strutting her stuff and giving me a big wave from the stage. It's always nice to break the new ones in don't you think? She's the third I have had to pleasure of tupping before they go on stage. There's a couple of bar maids I'm discreetly seeing there too, again tips grease the wheels of info as to what's available, it's a very minor fee well worth paying, if they want to pretend it's for 'security' or I'm paying for the wet wipes I really couldn't care less.

Anyway the point I am making is that whether you pay the security lady is a matter of supreme indifference to her because she is going to get paid anyway. It's just that if you don't you're stiffing the dancer out of 10% of her hard-earned wages because you're leaving her to pick up the tab. Like I say, if I choose to frequent a place where attractive young women offer sexual favours to old geezers like me for cash I really don't want to get the reputation of being a cheap charlie. It's personal thing, I leave others to follow their own consciences and make no judgement one way or the other.

I don't have enough Kota experience to give solid advice but I have heard good things about Mercure Kota.
