and am aware of the prices. But do I get hit up with high prices off the bat the answer is yes 15 years ago and as of my last trip the answer is still yes! You can't change your stripes but you can change your habits and approach.
Whenever I am hit up with a high price by a girl, I usually tell them nicely in Thai that I would like to just buy her a drink and after that I usually move on. My last trip at Nana Angel Disco, I was sitting at the bar near the door watching everything walk-in, two girls walked in and stood in from of me and started to dance and I brought drinks for both of them and struck up a conversation with only one. As the lights came on the girl ask me if I wanted her to come to my hotel room and I replied yes. She whisper 3,000 baht and I said I would take her and her friend for $3,000, and they both agreed. The one that originally ask for 3K left after 1 1/2 hour the other one stay all night which I end up having a better time with.
Year after year it's the same thing with me with high prices. I found that patients is the key along with some Thai conversation. No matter how hot the girl is I wait it out and many times I take the lesser and find that I usually get more than I expect in the end. IMHO, no matter how long you have been going to LOS, everyone pays their dues on every trip! Take it as it comes and enjoy! My game is to prove that I'm not 2 inches don't come quick and don't pay the prices that you think I should pay! and lesson learn that don't judge a person by it's cover.

Finally i got my act together and post a longer report/article.
My buddie and me usually visit BKK 6 to 8 times a year. We both live in HK so it makes sense to pop over for a long weekend once in a while right ?
Here is the usual schedule:
Arrive int he morning at 10 am. transport to hotel and check in. Then head to the food place opposite beer garden in Soi 7. After sumptous good and yummy Thaifood grab a beer in Beergarten and check out the scene. Always so much change in even just a few weeks since we have been there. (AKA the new "ROOF")
After a Singh or two we head to ANN's (not Annies) for Manicure/Pedicure etc. Nice and relaxing. By that time it is 4pm plus. Time to head for a game of pool in either Soi 7.5 or near the Nana carpark. Pool place in soi 7 is also ok.
Then decision has to be made: Soi Cowboy or Nana. usually we will head to Nana EP for the first night and end up with a bar gal. I rencetly hooked up with waitress in one of the joints and everytime I come back, for the first night I will taker her. No english spoken but believe me we get along just fine.
Day 2:
Usually, after having another go in the morning, send the girl politely to her cab.
Then meet my buddy and hang out at the hotel swimming pool. Lunchtime, same place same food. We love it !! My buddy recently hooked up eith the gal from that food place. Laguna seafood or something. She is a nice innocent gal who just broke up with her Italian bf. So my buddy is "comforting" her. A job well done.

Day 4: This is usually a day of mixed feelings. Out flight leaves at 6pm and we have a "whole" day to kill. Being rather exhausted and lacking sleep (not to mention the beers in our bellies/heads) we usually play pool and drink soda water or red bull.
Recently it has happened that we still squeezed one on from beergarden right before headign to the airport at aroun 4pm.

Being a regular fan of Shark at soi cowboy (after an extensive quality testing process i performed about 2 years ago) i rarely get to go to any other bar in Soi Cowboy, so i was pleasantly surprised at how good Deja Vou was. There is a high proportion of nice looking girls. I noticed most were not skinny, they all had a reasonable amount of meat on them (for a thai) but none were fat or unattractive as a result. The show was good, harping back to the old days in Bangkok (for those who use to come to bangkok before the TRT Party (Thai Love Thai) took over, you will know what i mean. Well worth a visit if you get up to Soi Cowboy.

also, imho, if you see one wat, you've seen them all. forget the river/canal tour. just take the bts to the river and then get on the river taxi for 20 baht and take it to the end. turn around and come back, get off at the grand palace and you have accomplished all your sight seeing in one afternoon. this saves a lot of time for other activities.

That would work for farangs, since the BG's would automatically associate any decent Thai linguistic ability with being an English teacher, retiree, backpacker, expat with a Thai wife/girlfriend, or frequent sex tourist. :o
It doesn't work too well in my case, since they would equate my Thai speaking capability as a wealthy Thai-Chinese businessman. :(

Second Night went to nana plaza, went to a couple of clubs didn’t like the quality of the girls after coming from Soi cowboy the first night. Met one sweet heart in one of the upper level bars. The locals' mongering market, or rather one part of what is probably all over Chinatown.
