Heck, even in the Philippine Embassy here, one of the questions thrown at visa applicants is 'why do you want to go to Philippines so often' and. Well, a colleague had retorted back why do filipinos come to Singapore, so often, when the country is just 40 km by 60 km. Way to go.

Moral of the story, majority of these immigration officers behave the same way, does not matter where you are. Actually the best immigration officers in my opinion are those in Hong Kong and Bangkok. They care less as long as your paperwork is in order.

I arrived at San Francisco airport about 10:30 pm. I went through immigration and then got stopped as I was trying to exit (before the guy who collects those purple paper). This customs guy, an older white dude tells me I need to put away my phone. I tell him, I thought that was only at the immigration area. He looks at me, then looks at the pruple form, adds an initial to it. Then asks me to proceed to the area for "futher" checks. I overhear another customs guy saying they need 3 more to finish the quota that night. Anyway, the guy who pulled me over earlier showed up and proceeded to go through every square inch of my carry on bags. Spent an extra hour at SFO after 12 hours of flying.

He did this because I apparently was a "smart mouth". This is just one of many incidents in many airports. I get treated poorly when I return to the US, every single time because I am a brown Asian Indian American. I get treated really well outside of the US.

Moral of the story, keep your cool, keep your mouth shut, don't joke around, keep it short and sweet, and no smart mouthing! . It does not matter where you are, those guys in uniform have some power to make your life miserable.

From my past experience one of the biggest problems I have seen is they really screen the younger women hard. One time I was travelling to Hong Kong with my 19 yr old GF and the customs guy made her call her father so the customs man could speak to him to verify that she had permission to leave. When I looked back at it, it made sense. She was 19, had never used her passport before and I was a whole lot older than her.

Some things I can think of off the top of my head: make sure you are both dressed nicely so that you give the impression of upper class. As cool T said, it never a good idea to talk sense to immigration officials. Just answer what they need to know. Now I have some good ideas as to what to say if they ask me silly questions.

I am going from NAIA to North Ermita to take the Southern Cross Shuttle bus. Are taxis from airport reliable and are they likely to try to overcharge? The hotel asks 600PHP which seems rather high compared to what the shuttle bus costs.
