Santo Domingo

I think this was mentioned here before, just want to bring the info back to the front. It's a tip on an inexpensive, but decent restaurant in the Gazcue area. It's on Casimiro De Moya (one block north of Ave Independencia) near the corner of Ave Pastuer. It's called Phillipe Dominicana. It's a very small restaurant in a quiet area. Nice place to bring a date or friends. They have a small menu of dominican dishes. The food is delicious. If you are also sick of inflated bill / checks because of itbis and other taxes, then this is the place for you. They serve lunch and dinner. I think they open around 11:30am & close around 7pm. It's best to come there early or mid afternoon. It is a very cozy & popular place for the locals, and they tend to run out of food selections very quickly. I ate there most times. Clean, good service. The last time I went there, we ordered two meals to go. 2 separate containers of rice & beans, with chicken (each with a little salad) , and one order of avocado. All for only 360 pesos.

If you continue walking north on Ave Pasteur after a block or two, you will see a Sushi Ya restaurant on the left, supposedly good sushi. Around the corner from Sushi Ya (northwest) is a small PizzaHut restaurant that has take out and does deliveries (in case you don't want to go out), the pizza is OK. Across the street from that PizzaHut is a money exchange place that gives the same rates as Frank's on El Conde. If you walk west on that street after a block or two you will see an O y M University building for its students who study tourism, across the street from that building is a colmado (Pujols Colmado) that has a small courtyard in front, with tables and chairs, on a Friday night some of the O y M University students who study tourism, congregate at that colmado and have drinks, while sitting outside. Maybe you'll meet one who wants to practice her English (ISG member Koki showed me the money exchange place and that colmado).

There is also a lesbian bar in Gazcue, which I believe is painted pink with hearts on the outside.

I often wondered if I was solo, would I have been able to pull a girl from the university or the colmado? I went to the Scotia Bank on Maximo Gomez (right off of Santiago ). I went once in Oct and again this March and both times I saw a female customer there who was eyeballing me and one offered me a smile. Maybe I didn't look like the average dominican customer there? Unfortunately both times I was with my "sand" and couldn't strike up a conversation with those women. I also wondered about the fine ass girls working at the casino next to Pure disco. Had I been solo, maybe I might have been able to establish some interest and work out a plan to see them after work? I have to plan a solo trip one day and find out what I'm capable of pulling off.

I used that cambio you are talking about. It is on calle Santiago, diagonally across from the plaza where the pizza hut is. I think it's called Casa De Cambio. The rate as of March 4 was 40. 70. I got 40. 85 at another cambio in a bus station (I think Caribe) , a taxi guy took me to. (don't recall how we got there, but will investigate ). I think it was under a highway overpass.

BTW for anybody who is interested : I use Bank Of America in the states. BofA has an alliance with Scotia Bank. If you use your BofA debit card to make a withdrawal you will not be charged any fees. So use your card with confidence, without feeling you have to bring a lot of cash from home (USA) with you to exchange. A 10, 000 peso withdrawal (the maximum) ends up with a $245. 10 US debit from my account. That's a rate of 40. 80 pesos per us dollar. If you need more, just keep withdrawing. Bear in mind the maximum per withdrawal is 10, 000 pesos. I did this 3 times to get 30, 000 pesos at the Scotia Bank in Cabarete in Nov. Definitely let your bank know you will be using your debit card abroad before you take your trip.

There is a large Scotiabank building on Kennedy and Lope de Vega and a Scotiabank ATM in Zona Colonial about three blocks from the Hard Rock Cafe. Last time I checked, Bank of America offers a free checking account, and I presume they give you an ATM card. As you state, using a BofA ATM card at Scotiabank ATM machines, no fees.

Caribe Tours has a bus station under an elevated part of Avenida 27 de Febrero (on the north side of Ave. 27 de Febrero, a block or two east of Ave. Maximo Gomez, US Embassy is on that same side street but south of 27 de Febrero). Good rate you got there, there is free 30 minute parking next to the Caribe Tours Bus Station.

And it is just like you said. I also recall the Embassy nearby. He said the station was near Maximo Gomez, (and now I remember I was under Ave. 27 de Febrero ). I recall the small parking lot to the left of the bus station too. My taxi parked there while I went inside the plaza for the cambio. I didn't know about the Scotia Bank in Zona Colonial near the Hard Rock cafe. Thats useful info in case I stay or I'm hanging out in that area. Thanks a lot.
