The plan for today. After my tour of Yogyakarta, from the airport straight to Alexis.

Started this day early to catch my 05:25 flight to Yogyakarta. Toured the temples and Yogyakarta, with a 19:25 flight back to Jakarta. My flight coming back was delayed so didn't arrive back into Jakarta until 21:15. Since on the map Alexis is so far north, I figure why not go from the airport straight to Alexis. Went to the bluebird taxi line and the line was even longer than the day before. Since it was so late, I saw only one person waiting at the silverbird taxi line, so I went over there. To give you an idea how much more the silverbird taxis are, they start the meter at $1,500. The bluebird taxis start at 7,000, and the express taxi's start at 6,000. At some point I took a ride in all of the taxis. All were pretty good but I did have one incidence that I'll write about in another thread. Anyways, from the map I studied before leaving, Alexis didn't look that far from the airport, in fact it didn't look further than my hotel. Final bill for the silverbird to Alexis $186,000. I actually used my credit card for this taxi so that I had money for Alexis. I know they take CC at Alexis but just in case.

Alexis is the first place I saw non Asian clientele at. Like other have said, there are sections for girls from Thailand, China, Vietnam, Eastern Europe, and locals. I almost took a Chinese girl who looked like Lucy Liu, but settled for a local. Again her name escapes me but it sounded like Harmony or Trinity. She is tall, slim and very pretty. I arrived Monday Nov. 17th, around 16:00. Got my voa and luggage and headed for the bluebird taxi line. Passed all of the taxi bandits and got in a long line for Bluebird. After 30 minutes, I get into the taxi bound for the hotel. Took about 50 minutes and cost around $160,000 rps with tolls included. Check in was a breeze and the room was okay. Nothing fancy but still good and roomy. While unpacking, I notice I forgot to bring my pair of dress shoes. That left bat's and cj's out. But again, I'am not a late nice person but it would have been nice just to see these places.

My favorite place to play is Brazil and the big clubs here, reminded me of the big night clubs of Sao Paulo. With the exception that the girls there get to roam around and mingle and the clubs here, basically the girls stay in their designated areas. What they both have in common, nice accommodations, food and drinks, lockers, and most of all many beautiful girls. Another difference which is significant to me, in addition to the one you point out about girls roaming around, is that although years ago the clubs in Sao Paulo charged an all inclusive fixed fee for time with the girls, now one has to negotiate with them, which for me is a pain, and gives more opportunity for them to charge gringos more than Brazilians. And, of course, prices have shot up in Brazil generally, even when one takes into account the recent dive in the reais value. But I see some similarities (as you point out) between the Sao Paulo and Jakarta clubs. And I don't know if you took advantage of the sauna, steam room, and whirlpool at Malioboro, where there sometimes are topless (or maybe bottomless) girls dancing around, but those even beat the facilities at most Sao Paulo clubs.

As to waiting 30 minutes for a Bluebird, if you face this next time I would recommend getting in the almost always shorter Silver Bird line. It costs maybe $7 or $8 more from the airport to the hotel, but besides avoiding the wait you will likely be driven in a Mercedes by a more better driver than the case with the Blue Birds (same company, better and more experienced drivers assigned to the Silver Birds, on average). After a long trip this means something (at least to me).

Edit: I wrote this as Day 3 was being posted. So I see you did find the Silver Bird line. Although Silver Birds start either at 12,000 or 15,000 depending on the type of car and maybe other factors, one might think the incremental fee increases with distance traveled would be similarly about twice as much for a Silver Bird. In fact it is is less than that, although I'm not sure by how much. Going to the Grand Hyatt, for example, it is rare that the Silver Bird costs more than around $250,000 in my experience. That is around $20 US.

After about 40 minutes the taxi driver finally asked another driver where Classic was. The other driver pointed back from the direction we just came from. I was a little upset, but this wasn't going to spoil my mood, I'am on vacation. Then it went from bad to worst. The drive back was more stop than go. Every intersection was a cluster puck. The driver apologize but the meter was still running. I told him to stop the meter since it was his mistake. He said he couldn't. Eventually he did stop the meter, but would start it up again after a while. I'am sure he did it because the company could track what he was doing. We started out leaving the mall around 15:45, and arrived at Classic around 17:45. The meter showed $75,000 so I gave him $100,000. I wrote down his number to complain later but when he gave me back my change, he gave me $50,000 and apologize again. At least he took some responsibility so I was satisfied and didn't complain to the company.

Walking into the hotel, I pass a restaurant and head towards reception. I get stopped by two workers and ask what room for the elevator. I told I wanted to go to the lounge. They said I passed it and I pointed to the restaurant. They said yes, that's the lounge. I knew this wasn't the lounge I wanted. So I changed tactics and asked them if there was a massage place. As the departure money changers are expecting you to be offloading your rupiahs there. I actually got this advice from one of the money changers cuties on the lift between floors who was carrying FX between travel changers belonging to the same business.

Also if you're worried about being overweight (with baggage not exhaustion from a weeks mongering in Jakarta) on leaving CGK there is a free weighing machine for bags just outside the left luggage shop.

In Indonesia this varies a bit between banks but I can extract between 1. 5 and 2 million every time, up to 4 times per day. Having a credit card besides this means I don't pay bank charges.

Why don't you all demand the same service from your banks? If a small country like the Netherlands can organise its bank affairs like this, larger countries should be able to do this also. Many of you have consciously lived in the sixties so you must know how to protest. Your bank makes enough money from you so demand proper service.

I use it all the time in Indonesia and Thailand without any problems. I carry very little extra cash as I can go to an ATM (in Plaza Indonesia for example) and get what I want. I don't believe I have tried to get more than 3 million rupiah in a day, but probably could. I carry a back-up ATM card in the event the Schwab card does not work, but have never had to use the back up.

The Dutch have been financiers and world traders since before New Amsterdam was founded. That's NYC to anyone who has never opened up a history book. It doesn't surprise me that Dutch Banks were among the first to offer their consumers innovative services like free ATM debit cards. Thankfully, American Financial Institutions are beginning to offer a similar product.

Charles Schwab Bank now has a checking account with a debit card that guarantees no ATM fees worldwide, no monthly service fees, no minimum balance, plus interest on the outstanding cash in the account. This is the best debit card out there for Americans.

Capital One the credit card company is now offering its customers a 360 Checking Account. It too features no ATM fees charged by the bank worldwide, but unlike the Schwab card, I believe there may be unreimbursed local ATM charges when the card is used at non aligned ATM's.

The days of bringing gobs of cash to Asia are over.

After another big breakfast, I did the gym pool thing for the early part of the day. Took the bus and got off at Monas. While walking to Monas, I saw the city bus coming down the street. Since I had reached the city bus, bus stop, I decided to jump on. From the bus I saw how far I had to walk just to get to the entrance. Since it was so hot and muggy, which was everyday, I decided to just stay on the bus for the whole tour. The air condition bus was great, but the guide only spoke Indo, so I missed some of the site's and history behind them. Back where I started, I got off the bus. Time to go to Emporvium. I wasn't sure what time they open but later found out the girls start coming in around 14:00. Today's plan, Emporvium, Classic.

In a dilemma today. I have an early 06:20 Sunday morning flight out. Do I try and get back early to rest before my flight home? Or do I stay out all night, then head over to the airport? Since I have a hard time sleeping on the plane, I decided to play a little and call it an early night.
