After all of the adverse reports not long ago, I was a bit apprehensive about taking my lady there.

As you are an old China hand, let me tell you what happened to me in Shanghai one night 14 years ago. I was staying at a hotel. I met a girl strolling out front. I think that so many are unconcerned about pregnancy because of their culture. It seems perfectly acceptable in their culture to have several kids that are left with the family as long as you are off working and sending money. Although my experience is limited, I found Filipinos to be far less color conscious than other SE Asians. Although most can point out which celebrities are pure Filipino vs mixed and will tell you quickly that many people associate white skin with beauty, most did not seem to give a shit about it.

I just returned home from my first trip to the Philippines where I stayed in a small town with the family of a woman I guess you could say I was with. She is late 20s and a non-sex worker. As I spent time around her family I noticed the same trend that I have seen with other filipinos, one or both parents of most of the children were abroad working (in one case the parent had been gone for 3 years only returning once). The other thing I also noticed is that when a child is born, regardless of circumstances, one or more relatives will chip in to take care of the kid. It is not uncommon for other members of the family to adopt a child. At one point I thought I had gotten her pregnant and she was very nonchalant about it, even telling me that she would not ask for money and if the news made me run that was okay. I did not understand her attitude, especially since in many SE Asian countries getting a woman pregnant means you don't have to pay but she will try to hit you up for cash. Although she is not pregnant, after visiting with her family I would have been okay if she had been.

My point is that although money from a western person can help with the family and a child, many Filipinos seem to be willing to try to get by without it. Obviously there are some out there who see western sperm as dollar signs or at least a green card, but there are others who cope with their decisions.

I think the condom use probably says more about education and the prevalence of testing than anything. Take Cambodia for example, from what I understand there was a period where bareback was standard practice. This led to very high incidences of stds and hiv / aids. At the time there was tons of NGO money flooding into the country and there was also an outcry against the rise of prostitution (yes those were the days when you could get a villager to sell their 12 why / o daughter to a foreigner). Some of the money was used to test sex workers and the long term projections for hiv / aids infection rates were very scary. At that point money was poured into education and now many P4P providers in Cambodia insist on using condoms. Even in Thailand condom use is now fairly standard, but guys tell me that as recently as the late 90s it was fairly optional.

In travelling SE Asia I have found condom usage to be highest with the more hardened workers. In other words freelancers who are out every night and others who go with multiple men per day or week. I found that the girls who go in between (for example massage girls who will give anyone a hand job but will only have sex if they like you or you put out a lot of cash; girls who will go with a guy but are just as happy not to; girls who limit the number of men per week.) are far less likely to demand a condom be used. Younger and newer girls who have generally only had sex with men they are in a relationship with were also far more likely to take the up to you approach. I think that some of the in between women are so likely to do this because some are uneducated and others do not see you as a high risk partner (you may not look like or come off as the typical sex tourist who pays several different women over the course of a trip). It is possible that some of the same women who give you full service bareback will give other guys a CBJ.

Let's also keep in mind that market forces can alter behavior. Given the number of men posting stories on the Philippines boards here about having bareback sex with bar girls, go-go girls,...it is possible that the average monger in the Philippines prefers unprotected sex. If that is the case it leaves the workers with the choice of perhaps having to turn away customers or agree to have unprotected sex. You mention that most women jump on you with no condom. My guess is that if these are prostitutes and you ask them why, most will say that the customers expect to not use a condom. I've met tons of guys who will not go with women who will not do a bbbj. Some of the sex workers in bars and go-gos can also be among the least educated / most ignorant. The girl from a small province who goes to Maynila to work at a go-go may know about std and hiv / aids, but since she has never known anyone who has it may think it cannot affect her. My guess is that there is also no required testing, which means there are probably a limited number of studies done to track hiv / aids rates in the country. My guess is that if the government or and NGO pumped tons of money into finding the current infection rate and projecting future rates, the amount of condom usage would rise church or no church.

He said many of the pinay he's met think that having a child with a white man is a pretty good idea. I can confirm a similar experience. There is a new, different girl (or more than one) on each of my trips who is vocal about making a baby for one reason: how I look.
