The managers mostly avoid to tell that clearly to their customers, because they are afraid to loose the guys than, because they will think the place is too "dangerous". The normal "excuse" for that will be redecoration, holiday or what ever instead of that!
From my point of view it gives me a good feeling, if a place will be closed because of the "weather forecast", because that is a proof to me, that they have a very good contact to the "weather maker"! That also means the risk to get an unannounced storm or even rain locally should be much lower than in a place, where they never close because of the weather forecast.
The other sauna she wanted to guide you to is a similar place not far away. Most managers have a "plan be" in form of a second similar sauna place. They can bring their guests there, if their main place is closed. Or also if the guest not found a girl he like, the manager still has a change in his second location.

As far as Ming hui goes, Steven posted some time ago that needed to 'act' closed for a while. I happen to drive past there everyday and have noticed the light through the door is no longer visible. And the updates are sporadic at best.
I may know the place they tried sending you to, I recently posted about it, but did not go into detail. It is just a bit further down wuzhong lu from where you ended up. Give me a pm if you want more detail.

Usually all of them have a STD clinic.
However, if you do not speak Chinese or feel more comfortable with a more discreet experience I have heard good things from expats about this place:

They really insert 3 times wooden sticks in his urethra. Never any action like that was necessary for a STD check in Germany. And I believe him, that this is a fucking uncomfortable procedure! So I not recommend to visit a typical Chinese hospital for that.
But I have to restrict, that this is only a "Third Party" information, so if anyone here can report a "First Hand" experience, could be it is different.

So no one can answer your question seriously. For Chinese the answer is mostly: "as more tall, ass bigger the boobs, as younger the girl, as more pretty she is". That is for example the taste which is base of the "model criteria" here in Shanghai, but if you are not a "big tits lover", many models will not really be attractive for you.
So there is no other serious way than to go out and check it out for yourself. Personally I recommend the Jiang Li sauna or the Red House sauna for that, because they have a wide range of girls in selection, so you also have a good chance, that your personal taste is covered in one of this "levels", while you will be lost in Kangding Sauna, if your personal taste is far away from the Chinese "model taste".

Literally it comes from the girls who will be used for the typical Chinese styled car show, where every brand will have several models in sexy clothes around their product. This girls matched to the Chinese ideal beauty (Tall, slim, big boobs) and several of them also offer a "special service" for outcall. The most sauna managers have contact to some of them to be able to help customers out with special requests, and Chinese guys are very generous. I know models who also get 50.000 for a short time from Chinese guys.
Here the mentality difference becomes clear. While many foreigners expect to get better service or something special, if they pay more, the Chinese are OK to show, that they are able to pay more. I explain that with an easy story.
If I would tell my western friends, that I just spend 50 k to have sex with this pretty model over there, they will think I am stupid, a greenhorn (and what great kind of party I would be able to have for that somewhere else or with someone else) and my reputation would drop with that! If I would be Chinese and would tell exactly the same to my friends, my reputation would skyrocket, because I am able to afford that, so that means I am so rich that I can do that. And actually having money is the point which all other guys around will admire and envy you!
Also hard to understand for foreigners: The girls mostly will be promoted with their "car brand". That means they get more customers, if they are the Ferrari or Benz Model than if they would be the model for Skoda. For foreigners hard to believe, that he has to pay 5000 more to fuck the model, just because of the car brand she work for. For Chinese this is the most important criteria for booking a car model here in Shanghai. You can brag out with it by your friends, and that's why you did it!
So from my view the "car models" are never a good choice for foreigners. All my customers who gave them a try had the experience, that this girls are not worth the spending. They expected a special "high class service", which they never got. A Chinese model can make a fortune without offer any special things, just because she mach to the ideal beauty taste. The most of this girls have very restricted service (for example often only one shot, no blow job or only covered blow job, never CIM or anything like that). Simply they think, a guy can be happy if they open their legs for him and there is no need to provide many more for that! And actually they are right, Chinese guys not expect more, but this cause problems with foreign guest, who not understand, that they should be thankful already to had the chance to sex with them.
So my summery: if you expect to get a very good service or a special experience, than the car model girls should not be your first choice.

The price of 5000 rmb is not SUPER expensive for a WOW girl. Think of what you have to pay for a high end girl in NYC, London or Amsterdam. You may spend that amount easily in an upscale KTV in Shanghai and have no pay off at all.
And 5000 rmb will get you an economy seat on a plane. I still recall with dread my last trip back to the States: long flight delays, lousy airplane food, intrusive security check, the long flight etc. I would much rather spend the 5000 rmb riding what you call a super end high girl (or 6 value girls based on a rough average of your usual range) than the plane seat.

I tend to keep quiet about my sauna visits so I definitely won't be bragging to anyone about paying for a car model. I would probably regret the damage to my wallet -- some of my best experiences have been with the cheaper girls for sure. That point about Chinese people wanting to show off that they can afford to waste money makes a lot of sense. I've heard of karaoke joints (regular singing, not sex oriented) that cost 10,000 rmb per night which seems crazy to me. That is why it is recommended to test outside of mainland (ie HK).
Laws are meant to have changed (HIV positive are meant not to be banned from China anymore) but who knows what they really do and the reason they'll use to deny you entry if they do.
