Hi,
I will be in HK & Macau for 1 week from Sunday. I have been mongering before in €, DR & India, so I am not really new to the mongering game, but the information in this thread is rather overwhelming, so I am a bit confused, maybe someone is kind enough to guide me through some basic questions: [SNIP]
A few further comments regarding mobile phone services.
There are many mobile company phone shopfronts in HK. China mobile, Three, Smart, CSL and PCCW. Look for these signs prominently displayed. There are also 'virtual' operators like CITIC and China Unicom but I have no idea if they have tourist plans and many of them do not have convenient shopfronts.
My suggestion is go to a PCCW shop. Unfortunately, not so many in Central, but ask a friendly policeman. They usually speak English. PCCW have a special tourist card which gives you voice, data and Wi-Fi.
If you do not buy the special tourist card, you do not need to buy an expensive data plan. Buy a PCCW short term wi-fi package called Netvigator. PCCW have wi-fi hotspots around the streets so you can use Google streetmaps etc out and around in HK. Most cafes etc have wifi, but you generally have to ask for passwords so Netvigator is useful when you are out and about. Netvigator has quite a few deadspots. If you need a connection, go to an MTR station. There is always a good connection at these places.
If you plan on visiting mainland China, ask for a "1 card 2 number" SIM card. This gives you phone access at HK prices in China as well. Convenient if you are just popping over the border for a pop in Shenzhen. But may not be available on the PCCW special tourist card.
Have a great time!
