Guys, I am writing this to provide some warning of possible scamming. I was in Davao in March & April staying at the Marco Polo - great hotel with a fantastic gym & pool. I used my ATM card at the bank next door to the hotel on Rizal St (can't remember the name) I used my card once only. I live in Australia and have used my card only twice since, here in Sydney (as I generally operate other accounts). Yesterday there was a large withdrawal in London which I alerted my bank wasn't mine nor authorised. Bank security are investigating but think it is likely to be from the transaction I did in Davao as they have been getting a lot of similar scamming throughout Asia - though they are not sure.

My original comment to the security guy was, "but Davao is a small and quiet place and the bank is next door to a 5 star hotel" and then I realised if I was wanting to scam, that's exactly where I would set up. So guys please be careful. Check that there is nothing extra on the machine where you are putting your card into the slot and make absolutely sure no one can see you enter your PIN. Whilst not obsessive, I think I am generally careful and was probably moreso that day given I was new to Davao. This advice applies where ever you are, home or abroad. I may be doing Davao a diservice (I have fallen in love with the place) - as I said it may have occurred here but just giving you guys a reminder warning.

Also a belated thanks to the contributors to this board for all the valuable information which made it a memorable first trip. I promise to contribute in my next trip as I feel more seasoned.

Yes I went to Pico Bello and Spirale (at Damosa Gateway) but didn't try La Toscana (next time). Really I wouldn't go to Davao for the food. In Sydney we are spoilt by being so multi cultural and having the freshest of produce so whilst I often found the food good (like at the 2 italian restaurants mentioned), I never found it great. The charm for me was the people and the laid back atmosphere. I loved Torres Street with the bars, the music and the general relax that people had. I met interesting people everywhere from the pool at the MP to having lunch in the malls. People appear generally happy and are very welcoming.

I originally came with my girl friend from Manila who knew nothing of Davao other than Durian (which after she tasted only wanted the candy). She felt that she had found the sole of The Philippines in Davao and absolutely loved the place and the people. The bank next to the Marco is a Metro Bank Branch, but Rizal St. is actually several blocks away, though within walking distance to the Marco, so I'm not sure which bank Pompolino means. Sounds like you really took the time and effort to discover Davao and that your efforts paid great dividends. I think you're summarized nicely in your post the points about this place that DS and I have tried to make for the last several years. For the casual, more short-term tourist, Davao is not quite as "in your face" as Manila or Cebu, so it takes a little while and a little effort to discover what it has to offer.

I don't think there's any truly "outstanding" food to be had in Davao, but as you pointed out, you can eat quite well. The closest the city can come to outstanding is, I think, Claude's Cafe de Ville, which offers quite authentic typical French food, equivalent to what you would find in a typical brasserie in France. De Bonte Koe (Henny's place) in the Habana Compound, a one minute walk from Claude's restaurant is also quite good for standard European food, and I think it's got the best restaurant steaks in Davao.

As DS has said, Toscana offers good solid Italian food of the more homespun variety. Spirale, in Damosa Gate also has some very good items on its menu and has, I think, the best pizza in Davao. It's chicken parmigiana is also quite good. The new Thai restaurant Bangkok Wok, in Robinson's Cybermall has authentic Thai food and I can recommend it. It's not fancy, but it's quite attractive, reasonably priced and good.

By the time you return, there will be at least two additional Western restaurants: a new French place soon to be opened by Claude's daughter in the Victoria Mall area, and another opening on the site of what used to be El Toro in Habana Compound. Doubtless once the new SM Mall and Ayala commercial center opens, both on Lanang, there will be additional places, but I have no idea if these will be Western or more typically Filipino eatery-type places.

Let me emphasise that we don't know I was scammed there - it's just what the security officer investigating summises. I may well have been scammed here in Sydney, it's just that in his experience, Asia is rife with this style of scamming where they add something over the slot where you put your card in and a tiny spec camera attached to the side of the ATM to record your PIN. As my transaction at the bank was in March this year and the unauthorised withdrawal happened only a few days ago it may well have happened more recently in Sydney.
