I never saw one in Mabini when all the go-go bars were there and once Freddie Lim sent everyone packing to Edsa not too many Japanese there too. (Interestingly there are dozens of Japan-centric KTVs and hostess clubs in Ermita and Malate; it remains a mystery to me why they remained whilst the Westerners' clubs were shuttered.) The Koreans are relative newcomers (15 years or so), and for whatever reason they're determined to ruin it for everyone. Years ago they were known to the girls as the 2-3-4's. I reckon that 4 is now a 6 or 8 thousand pesos.

Rogues 1600, few bars next to Rogues between 1600. 2500, rest is the standard 3800 or is it 3900 (some will discount BF with ladies drinks purchases some won't) but thats the price. Girls can ASK whatever they think the punter will pay but almost all will agree to 2500 LT which in Manila means around 6-7am so she can get back home. Depending on negotiation skills price can go north or south and so can the time she leaves. If you are on budget best way is to hook up outside the bar after her shift.

mongering in that area is looking for trouble, even during the day. it is not so much what can happen on the street even though the general area has been known for armed hold-ups. and if the gunmen see a foreigner, they will always target him rather than a local the because they know he is more likely to have more money than a local. i personally know several foreigners and locals who were held up with guns in that area in the daytime. they were not mongering. there are several shopping areas nearby, including chinatown. 168 mall, medical wholesaler area and central market.

add to that the question. what happens when you go out of sight to do the biz with your chosen girl? you can be held up in the small street before you even get to the room. perhaps you might like the adventure of hunting in that area but don't make a habit of it because the local gangbangers will make you their mark. there is a reason why you were probably the only foreigner there. going there at night is just plain looking for trouble.

even though i have not personally experienced the quezon city street scene (you can read about it in this forum) , from what i heard i would say it is far safer than the area around carriedo which is near to some of the poorest and toughest neighborhoods in manila.

It was crowded and the girls plastic and businesslike. We stayed for an hour and decided to leave. We were hungry so we hailed a cab to take us to someplace to eat. As we were inquiring with the driver as to where is good, I asked him if he knew of "La Casa"."Oh sure" he replied and off we went."La Casa" are local *houses that are very well hidden. It turned out that he had heard about them and kind of knew where they are but wasn't exactly sure. Well, he turned out to be the diamond in the rough as he went person to person trying to find "La Casa" for us. We finally met an owner of 4 Casa. Yes, we will always be targets here due to our relative wealth, but I attempt to minimize the risks when I go out. For day excursions, I wear Eddie Bauer nylon cargo pants that have lots of Velcro and zipped pockets. I also wear a lightweight money pouch around my lower midsection and a nylon belt with a zipped compartment for currency. I divide my money up between all those spots. I also tuck a 100 peso bill into my walking shoes. Lastly, I never bring more money than I anticipate I need for the day's activities plus emergency money back to the hotel. I keep my credit cards and all other valuables in secured storage in the hotel room safe and front desk safe. If someone in Carriedo wants to rob me for 2, 500 pesos, then they can do so but they won't get rich or ruin my vacation.

The short time hotels in Carriedo have entrances right on the main street. No walking down some seedy dark alley. There was an armed security guard at the entrance too. When I showered, I took my pants into the bathroom with me and locked the door. In retrospect, I felt much safer walking around that area during the day than around Ermita at night.

Oh, I have a tidbit of additional info. For those of you tired of chatting up sales girls at the major malls and getting shut down, I got highly favorable vibes from the overly friendly sales help at the SM Clearance Store in Carriedo. When you exit the LRT, walk to the east side of the street where the main sidewalk vendors are located. Turn right and walk about 30 yards to the south. Then turn left and walk through the maze of street vendors and go down 1 or 2 blocks. Off to your right will be the Sm center housed in what I believe is a red painted multi-story building. The staff will chat you in groups of at least two because pinays are braver talking to us when they are in a larger group. Print your name and phone number on a small piece of paper. After the inane chatting is done, wander off for a bit, then circle back to the one you like. Discretely hand her the slip of paper and say,"you seem like a nice lady. I do hope you will text me sometime". It's worked for me in other locales and I can't imagine you won't have great success at this store.

Excellent report and follow up. Been over at the market at Quepos Chuch a few times but I wouldn't stray much farther. Never been intimidated in that area but that's about as far as I'd go. I look very very kano. Thanks again for your report.

To me that was half the fun. Carriedo is probably risky but I have been in much dodgier places and walked out in one piece. Maybe I am just plain lucky. Mind you a lot of it is probably down to attitude and bearing. If you look like a victim, you stand more chance of ending up as one.

To be honest, I think that there are many more bad guys in and around Ermita or Makati where they are attracted like so many shit flies by the many wealthy single male tourists. I don't know the statistics but I would not be at all surprised if the chances of getting mugged in these areas were far higher than anywhere else in Manila.

Example: sacramento to LAX then to Japan then final to manila. Roundtrip using American and JAL for just under $986. This at least $250 lower than anything I found. I only need to go back and check it includes all taxes / fees.
