My hotel is requesting now the same price as before (?)[/QUOTE]A friend and I were discussing this today and we have come to the conclusion that in Thailand and some other SEA countries, they seem to decide to raise prices/rates when business is slow, to offset the shortfall, or at least maintain them at their current levels. I don't understand the logic, I'd rather get a sale done, albeit at a smaller profit, than have an item sitting around gathering dust, whether it is pussy, hotel rooms, whatever.

As to who has the power to that in Thailand - my best guess would be high level officials responsible for monetary policy and administration in Thailand. For the same reasons the Chinese Government do it.

Im' sure some armchair economists here can tell us why they'd want to keep it high.
About who can do it, if you're guessing then your point is based on speculation. I honestly don't have a clue who handles such things in Thailand, or if the currency value is based on free market exchange rates or if it's set and controlled by someone. Someone here must know. But I think it's not the kind of assumption we should be making based on a guess. We know the Chinese do that, but we don't seem to know that Thailand does. Mabye they do. I'm just saying, so far nobody here is confirming or denying it.

Just looking for some tips on where to buy some cheap clothing in BKK? I have been to MBK so far and that place is HUGE. Although they seem to mainly have just t-shirts and polo's / jeans. Anywhere else people like to shop at?

Really, the baht stays more or less the same value but the US dollar depreciated a lot (and the Aussie appreciated much).

In many ways it's still a very conservative one, with all kinds of rules to try to enforce 'proper' behavior. I mean, what other country allows alcohol but forbids its sale before 11 am. and between 2 and 5 pm?

This topic has been talked about in the past and will continue to be a topic of discussion in the future. It has been applied to P4P to the Beer we drink. When times are bad they rise the prices it beats the hell out of us, where we were taught the opposite. Right now times are tough and for example on one street there are dozens of Thai massages places all charging 150/200 baht a hour for Thai massage and 150 for Foot massage. The place I go to has dropped their fee to 100 baht a hour and ask the ladies to take less but they will have more customers and possible tips to make up the difference instead of everyone just sitting around and making barely nothing. They have also dropped their Foot massage to 100 baht. They were making a killing and the ladies weren't getting rest. Now they reverse course and raise the prices again? Business was too good? At least they compromise somewhat and the Thai massage is 120 per hour but the Foot is back to 150 per hour. The lady says Foot is more expensive to her since they have to use that cream.

I remember when the baht was a 43? Their names are so long that it's impossible to remember but during that period I read in the Bangkok Post Business that some economics adviser suggested that they fix the exchange rate at 37, I was all for that since it would be a compromise to the 25/1 that it once was and the high of 43/1! not wanting to be greedy! Today look at it!
The guy that is responsible, I sure you have seen him in the papers and on the tube? Talk Thin guy with wire frame glasses I think is the the guy? Maybe others can verify or deny that? Yes there has been lots of talk that Thailand is controling the currency to their advantage that as long as their economy is still rolling and foreign investor are still coming in etc.... they aren't going to weaken their baht. Others official has criticize this approach!
Don't jump on me, just my opinion as to what I have read in the past and heard. No proof of anything your right before someone else says it!

I didn't take out any girl from the above. I was under the impression that these prices were the going rates, since they were quoted by veteran members on another board.
The max price I paid in Bangkok was 1000 bht ST, but it wasn; t from Go Go clubs.

Baccara was full of japanese mongerers when I was there, so that explains the high prices asked by the hot girls.
Anyone here with a recent experince with Baccara and its girls?
