Was Indonesia Number One?
I was just reading somewhere Thailand is ranked 2nd in the world for worst levels of road carnage. Just this year have heard of two guys from local village killed on Motorcycles. One a teenager (raced into side of a truck), and one a family man at new year (Songkran), possibly drunk or hit by drunk driver. Found mangled on roadside. Helmets? Maybe not.
Thais mostly go and buy a driver's license. So no necessity to know the road rules, and certainly don't abstain when drunk.
If Thais should go for a driver's test, they have to have a certificate guaranteeing their eye sight is good enough, from a Doctor, or Hospital. They go and purchase the certificate. No eye testing actually happens. A high proportion are short sighted and may need glasses for driving. Doesn't really happen that they drive with glasses on I think.
Yes still a very corrupt country. Is the military government fixing things? They are more image conscious rather than making real change, one feels. Stupid things like clean the street food vendors off certain main roads. Illegal late night cart bars can still open if they pay enough.
Have you ever been and driven in Indonesia? It is pure insanity. Tour Busses run families on motorbikes off the road. Drivers are so rude they do not let anyone cut into the flow. In Jakarta men stop the flow of major streets so that the other side road cars can immerge, and the cars that immerge throw small money to the man for his service. Balinese are wonderful people until they get behind the wheel, then they turn into pure evil. Motorbikes by the hundreds are like fly's on shit, weaving their way thru the masses of cars.
Thailand is a dream to drive in compared to Indonesia. Motorbike accidents happen all day long you see at least 3 a day as you drive to your destination.
RL.
I can only Imagine Indonesia Roadways
You've obviously never been to Indonesia. There is no comparison. There are very few motorbikes on the streets in Thailand relative to Indonesia. At any red light in Jakarta at rush hour, there will be a couple hundred motorbikes stacked up at the front of the cue in between and all around the cars when the light changes to green. You don't see that in Thailand.
I've only been in Thailand for 2 months and the roadways scare me. BKK is crazy, but car speeds are slow. The place that scares me is Koh Samui. Narrow, twisting mountain roads where scooters have 3 people and max out at about 20 km/hr up a hill. Meanwhile, cars are going 80 km/hr and they cross and pass 3-cars wide or 2 cars plus 2 scooters. That on narrow 2 lane road.
I watched one accident where a car sideswiped a scooter to the ground. My taxi driver acted as if it didn't even happen. All cars kept moving. I have no idea what happened to the scooter rider.
I'll never get on a scooter in Thailand. Being in a taxi is crazy enough. Too many Thai people are not safety conscious. It’s worse than lack of training and laws.
