I received a call on Saturday from a person named Hanumantha (initially speaking Kannada, but later switching to English through another person if you don't speak Kannada). I missed the call but called back within five minutes after seeing his name on Truecaller, which listed him as "Hanumantha PSI. ".

When I returned the call, he asked if my name was so-and-so (probably pulled from Truecaller). I asked who he was, and he claimed to be calling from the Sub-Inspector of Police. He told me they had arrested two Africans, and my number was found in their chat, so it was just an "enquiry call. " I was taken aback and hung up immediately. They never called back.

However, I was pretty shaken and worried afterward. So, I did some online research and found similar experiences from others. I also came across a post on ISG mentioning the same name, Hanumantha PSI, but with different contact digits. Currently, he's using the last three digits 546.

Please stay alert and don't fall for these scammers. Stay safe and, if you need to safely monger, consider using a different number or reaching out via Telegram. Also don't panic, if they do call understand their tone and if they asking money or some benefits to remove your chat / number / name, its mostly fake as true police will never ask for money. Also record this conversation just in case required.

Let me know if you also got any of these calls recently, please share your experiences and learnings for the benifit of larger brother community.

A real cop will always tell you his designation and which police station he is calling from. And he will ask you to go to that police station to discuss the issue. No real cop will ask you to pay online without visiting the P.S., as they will get fucked if they leave a money trail. This is their SOP, even if the real police wants to extort you for a bribe. They know that once you see the station and how much of a terrible experience it is, you are more likely to pay. So if the caller does not identify his station and does not ask you to go there, you can be 99% sure that it is a scam.
