Something you don't see everyday
if you've been to rio before, you should be aware of the wicked undertow at copacabana beach. if one is not careful, it will take you out to sea. if one is unlucky, you'll drown and your body will be found days later, probably near the copacabana fort. it's so dangerous that a fire dept search and rescue helicopter is sent to pluck the distressed swimmer via a net. this occurs very often. (i've seen it happen.) such was the case yesterday near posto 3. according to witnesses, the helicopter was trying to rescue a person, who was drowning, when it developed problems. the helicopter, which was flying low, lost stability, fell into the water and sank. the pilot reported that a panel lighted, indicating loss of rotation speed and consequently, altitude. at that moment, he descended into the water, trying to cause the least possible impact. the four firemen on board suffered minor injuries. the drowning swimmer was rescued by either a surfer or a lifeguard. and of course, in this digital age it was captured on video:

with the high heat and crowded beaches, a lifeguard reported to odia of 100 rescues performed saturday on rio's beaches! a witness stated that prior to the crash the helicopter had rescued at least 3 people. the fire dept now only has 2 rescue helicopters. careful going in the water.

the helicopter was removed from the water early this morning.
in other news: four armed men held up the rio rockers hostel, at rua tonelero, near rua lacerda coutinho in copacabana. they got $r2400 from the hotel and various items from the tourist staying there. and of course, the security cameras were not working.

Since when is Rio The Holy City?
Except you can also leave by the other exit sometimes, can't you, which takes out not by Rio Branco but onto the praca. In which case you have to turn right as you come out into the sunshine, and head over to the building complex (as long as you don't cross a road, there's nowhere else to go, so impossible to get lost.) Just go in past the sucos and burger bars to the ranks of elevators and find the right one.
The thought of anyone asking directions in the street for a paid sex venue fills me with horror. Centro is not Copa, and even in Copa it would be rude and utterly pointless but in Centro it's like asking a respectable, total stranger if you could shag his wife. You might get away with being a dumbass if you are a few yards from 4x4, but to ask the location of a private pleasure apartment would be utterly despicable. (And asking someone who isn't respectable will likely get you in deep sh*t, as has been pointed out.)
Yet I do remember many years ago on my first trip to Centro with a buddy. We walked in circles till our feet fell off. The directions in the last few posts should help any newcomer to avoid that; but if you get stuck, put it down to experience and go back to ISG or your maps when you get home or to an Internet cafe and strike out better next time.
When somebody who's never been to Rio reads your post would probably think Rio is the Holy City. What's the problem about asking for direction for some buildings number in Centro, most of this people you'd ask are regular customers there not a holy guys. Just ask man anything you need.
