I'm sure well be hearing more about this scam. Just when you think the DR can't get worse, now this.
I had something simular happen to a police friend two years ago. He was in Classicos dancing with a chica, when her lesbian lover attacked him. He left and as he was walking down the stairs leaving Classicos the girl jumps of a higher step like Bruce Lee. He knocked the girl out. The police came to Europa to investigate. He told the cops he was exiting the scene when he was attacked twice, the police didn't care. What saved his ass was her fingernail cut him right below the eye when she attacked him in Classicos, and the fact that he was also a cop. Without that cut under his eye it wouldn't have been self defense, and he wouldve went to jail.
Or three times in Marc Anthony's case! LOL Just giving you a hard time dude, I couldn't resist.
As usual, I appreciate the advice / information. Upon further deliberation, I've decided against renting a car. I deal with risk everyday and the most basic rule is to analyze the risk / reward BEFOREHAND!
NO piece of ass is worth 10k USD. Also, costs aside, who wants their vacation interrupted and filled with so much anxiety?
I just wanted to hit the open road and be free to discover things spontaneously and leave Sosua for some night time activity. It's not like I've been punked out of renting a car. The stories helped me better understand what I am dealing with. I'll probably just hire a taxi for a day here and there. If anybody has some good contacts, please pass them along.
I already know about the tire and windshield scams, but that other shit is next level. I'm sure I would have gotten myself into deep trouble or killed if I was in that story because there would have been a few instances where I lost my temper!
Over 25 trips renting cars in DR, worse problem I have encountered is Police stopping me, harassing me for money (pocket change money). Plenty of bad drivers in DR doing stupid stuff who will be more prone to get into accidents, and there are many of them out on the roads. Drive slow and take it easy and you should be fine. Between Sosua and Puerto Plata mostly sugar cane fields. I wouldn't give up on renting the car so easy. To be stuck being a passenger in an old beat up piece of shit vehicle at the mercy of a possibly crazy Dominican driver, I'd rather have my own two hands on the wheel of the car.
Don't forget you can see a lot of the country very safely, comfortably and extremely cheaply using the Caribe Tours and Metro bus networks, supplemented by local buses to reach the smaller towns (a bit less comfortably, but you see the real DR that way). Not the same as your own car, but very cheap and less stressful.
It is not the same. Much easier to get a blow job in a rental car, it is possible on a caribe tours bus or metro bus, but the seats recline more in a car, making things more comfortable.
Dear Pooter,
I gave some sound advice to an evolving scam being perpetuated through the very system that Marc Anthony describes for the benefit of this online community. It is up to you to decide whether to listen or not, or believe or not. I know it's true, I saw it first hand so whether you believe I'm a crackpot by the way I wrote it is not really important to me. I posted this to make more men aware that this "disneyland" and "playground" that they all enjoy can flip over on you quick. Register with the Embassy there on the North Coast, keep numbers handy. It might be 1 in a 1000 that get stuck on this scam, but 6 got hit with it in September. If one is one of those 6, this would have been important to know.
Again, I emphasize without caps: This scam involving domestic violence does not require anything but a plausible charge to be brought forth and a gringo will find himself in Puerto Plata prison until he is able to buy his way out, pay his attorney fees, and / or prove his innocence.
Maybe the contribution the gringo has in this scam is involving himself with a "working girl", however, isn't that what this forum focuses on?
I follow these forums all the time, what am I missing here? What domestic violence scam? What are the 6 hit in Sept?

Anywhere in Latin America, you are better off hiring a car and a driver vs. Renting a car. Even if you think it's cheaper to rent the car, it's not, when all costs are considered. There is the cost of being hassled, the cost of the stress of the way they drive, and the cost of them claiming imaginary damage and charging it to your credit card. There is the cost of bribes. There is the cost of being accused of being drunk when you are not. There is the cost of being accused of being drunk when you in fact have been drinking. And then, of course, there is the cost of them getting their hands on your credit card. One huge issue there is that they will rent you a car, arrange for it to get stolen, and charge your card for the entire and often inflated cost of the piece of shit car they rented you.
It's just not worth it, and it isn't necessary. For a lot of gringos, it is sort of a natural, knee-jerk thing to do. Go on vacation, rent a car. No.

A friend of mine was a victim of a scam like that. Got into a conflict with an expat property owner. Called him out for being a thief. Called the cops on the expat. The cops came, did nothing, then left. Next day: the expat got hit girlfriend to claim that he hit her. Cops were called. Guy went to shitty Sosua jail.
Never had a trial. Never got officially charged. Embassy never notified. Nothing. He had to send a message to an American friend in town who told a lawyer. After 2 days in the jail they took him to Puerto Plata. Some money was given to a judge. He was released. Never explained anything to him. Just told him that's how it goes. Found out later that the woman was the niece of some big judge somewhere in Cibao.
On another subject: any of you guys run into any girls in Sosua who can deep throat or take a nice face fucking lately?

while we are discussing scams it's worth mentioning how perfect ****d sex is as a set-up. us citizens can be charged with a federal felony in the us for engaging in sex with minors anywhere in the world. the dr has a plentiful supply of 17 year olds with 3 kids who have been doing it since they were 11. their tio just has to get a gringo to take the bait and the rest is easy. it makes no difference that she didn't look like a minor, claimed to be 18 or had kids. even if it offended nobody in the dr and she was a known puta, if she was a 17 yr old puta the gringo has committed a felony under us law and prosecution can be triggered by prosecution in the dr. it's not just a matter of getting out of the country, the real problem is the us.
what's it worth not to have your life destroyed? tio and the system could bleed a gringo dry to avoid those charges. nobody will even care whether she was put up to it. the crime is inherent in the act and the fact it was a set-up is not a defense. other than the simple lie that she is over 18 if the gringo even asks, there isn't even any deception needed. she really would be under 18 and the sex would be real. no question of guilt. witnesses would even be easy. many guys would happily take pictures or video to make the prosecutions case airtight.
just a reason to check those cedulas and never be tempted to think she's obviously of age.

the crazy part is that he probably could've gotten away with it. he's dominican that speaks perfect spanish and was visiting his homeland for the first time. but why risk a chance for a set-up when you got honeys turning 18yrs old everyday.
I agree with the fact that the DR (especially Sosua / Puerto Plata) is getting more dangerous than in previous years. I have been coming to the DR for 12 years now and have been living here since retiring 3 years ago. I have always been...
Good post and sad, thanks.

Your friend did the right thing by exiting and avoiding confrontation. I don't think that it is possible to avoid all the traps, but you can reduce the possibility by not walking as a target, meaning don't flash, don't go around claiming that you are rich to impress the girls. I won't bring my stupid brother back to DR as he keep doing those thing, most of the time wearing a jacket and being drunk all the time not remembering the stupidity that he has done the previous day.
Which bring the following question? If your friend didn't had the fingernail cut and being himself a Police officer, could he had avoided going to jail by tipping the Police investigator?

My thoughts
Having your own car is very convient but there are risks. In the DR those risks can be extreme. I think maybe one out of a 100 may have a problem. If you are in Santo Domingo like many big cities taxis are very practical and the peace of mind is great. If you are in more rural sections then go for the car. I have driven and rented a cars in the SD and it is a bucket list experience. Easy to make a mistake for the uninititated. I think having a relationship with a driver is a real plus. You are on a vacation why not relax and focus on the fun let juan do the driving for you. [Plan yout trip so your hotel make your activities easy. Get a hotel or appartment close to the action so your rides are generally short and if you have an excursion rent the car.
