For those of you planning to come over here for a month or more, you might want to check out Red Knight Garden Apartments. This is a one-story apartment complex on Lanang near the Grand Regal Hotel. It's got it's own small pool and restaurant. I just introduced someone to the owner there, and negotiated a month-long lease for him at roughly $13.50 a day for a furnished studio apartment with maid service. The place is clean and attractive, and for those who are tired of hotels, it might be a good alternative. It's owned by an English guy and his Filipina wife, and it appears to be reasonably well managed.

I will get back to my Post on the Stalker Lady of Davao later. First I want to cover a few other items. I do not know if anyone reads my posts here. This is about the same as what I said over three years ago on the old Davao Board, my original Board.

I still like the Casa leticia for its location and terraces in the suite rooms on the fifth floor. I guess I talked it up too much on the old board, as now you need reservations a couple weeks in advance. I mainly stay at the marco Polo but I do not like eating here (except room service) and there is nothing nearby that you can walk to from it. The Eagles Nest Bar is good but does not open until 5:30PM.

During the day Davao has penty to do and lots of interesting places to see. But at night, it is fucking great. There are now three Hot Legs Clubs and the new one, Hot Legs 3, is walking distance from Casa Leticia. I often dine for lunch at either Henny's De bonte Koe Restaurant or over at the Swiss Deli which is a bit of a taxi ride but has plenty of good wines and cold beer.

At night Chico's Club and Someplace Else are good for hanging out. I have been to Chico's several times during the week but never on the weekend. I understand that the women are hot here on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. I will try this on my next Trip very shortly. Donw the street, Rizal Promenade is good at night after 10:00PM when the band is playing. It has tables and open air bars and regular Bars around it. But nothing is happening here until at least 10PM.

For Daniel66 the Pearl Farm is pricey and there is not much to it. At night it is "every man holding himself" unless you have a woman with you. I think there are better ways to spend your money. I am going to check into some places myself for my upcoming Trip. When I was there in May, it was the summer vacation season in the Phils. All resorts are packed. I had difficulty getting flights to some of the places I was visiting.

My travel difficulties warrant a separate Post. Briefly, flights need to be booked a 3-5 days in advance, even to/from Manila and other Philippine cities. If you must get someplace by a certain time or date, do not count on Cebu Pacific Airlines. They are totally unreliable and are using price (not service or quality) as their sole marketing tool. I intend to fly Philippine Airlines as much as possible in the future.

this will be the third time or so that i’ve tried to post this. the other two did not go through and just disappeared for some reason. hopefully the third time will prove the charm.

i actually want to write about last week’s trip to zamboanga, which is probably not appropriate to the davao thread, but as there’s no "other" thread, this will have to do.

i stayed, as i usually do, at the garden orchid hotel, quite near the airport. though the lantaca, being located on the ocean, has a somewhat nicer location, the go is—in my opinion at least—a nicer, more comfortable hotel. the service is courteous and reasonably efficient. there’s free wifi throughout the lobby and lobby restaurant, and no one cares who or how many friends you may invite to share your accommodations. the food is not great, but there’s a decent japanese place on the lower level and at any rate, there are no "great" or even "very good" restaurants in zamboanga. i paid php1, 800 for a large, very clean room with air conditioning and a (very small) cable tv. the hotel has recently added safes to the room, which is an excellent feature.

i’ve been to zambo several times, and i’ve tried all the usual places. kiss me, the most well-known disco is somewhat tiresome. there’s a lot of pressure for ladies drinks (php350). the bar fine, at php3500 (including services) is ridiculous for zamboanga and the mama sans are a collective pain in the ass who will always try to slip in a drink for themselves and then tell you it’s "normal" procedure for the bar. love disco is sort of a port relation of kiss me with a more down market appearance but the same general ambiance and identical prices. blue diamond, the most down market of the "big three" is actually more fun. there’s less pressure. the all-in bar fine is php2, 000 but the ladies drinks are the same price as the others. none of the girls strip "all the way" at any of these places, except after about midnight when some start to take it all off.

anyway, been there and done that, so i decided, with some filipino colleagues to hit some of the more strictly local places. the one that stands out in my mind is called rams, a slightly seedy combination beer garden (in front) and club (behind), about a ten minute ride from the hotel. there ain’t nothing fancy about rams. the beer garden is a few plastic tables and chairs rep001tered over a concrete floor, with open walls and some sort of roof. it’s inhabited by two or three locals sipping red horse beer. the "club" portion is enclosed, though it has the same plastic tables and cement floor as the beer garden. however, the manager is a local guy (no, he is not gay) and he’s extremely pleasant, and extremely surprised to see foreigners.

there’s live music, offered by a bass guitarist (not too bad), a keyboard player (not very good) and an off-key female vocalist, warbling badly-pronounced renditions of old american rock. as an added bonus, the sound system sucks. but it’s all quite friendly, and there is a lot of dancing on the concrete floor. did i mention that at the rear of the room, there’s an extended table at which 14-15 women (fully dressed in street clothes), are seated at any given time. the affable manager will be quite happy to introduce you to any of them, and any of them will sit and drink with you. the ladies drinks (san mig beer) cost php150. any of them is also willing to go with you. the bar fine (i kid you not) is php150 and there’s no pre-established price for the ladies, most of whom will happily accept php1, 000 which extends to the whole night.

the women are not, admittedly ravishing, but there were three or four solid 7-8’s among them, and all were quite friendly and astounded (and delighted) at attention from foreigners.

all in all, this place was a lot of fun, and there was no hassle at all. everyone was quite friendly and seemed genuinely glad to have some expats inside.

zamboanga is not, as i’ve said before, worth a special visit, except from those perhaps who have already been to all of the major cities and want to try something and someplace new. it is however, a safe, clean, enjoyable city, with lots of places similar to the one described above, rep001tered around the town.

Excellent Post by GoodEnough. Now more on this from the Slayer. I first visited Zamboanga City in 1991 (yes, 16 years ago) as a young man. I had a lot of fun and stayed at a pension house in the downtown area.

I returned several times over the years. Personally, I liked Kiss Me Disco and enjoyed the show. As mentioned, the girls will get nude in the later evening. Around this Club are several open air bars and Clubs with siners and where the locals hangout. Definitely worth seeing.

After my first visit I stayed always at the Lantaka By the Sea Resort. I give this place a 9 on a 1-10 for ambiance and service. Dinner is on an openair terrace with candlelit tables. If you have a lady with you, definitely DO go here. I once brought a group of american guys with me down here. We got the Suite with the large walkway out onto the rocks where the waves crashed to shore. We also had the rooms on both sides of the Suite. It was nice.

In downtown Zamboanga City there are several Karaoke Bars and Discos. On weekends you can meet regular ladies at these places. For recreation there are many beautiful beaches. If you stay at the Lantaka, you can arrange boat rides for a day trip out to the other islands, including Basilan. The golf course out at Arciles Beach Resort is very good and you can see the ocean while playing 18 rounds.

This City is reasonably priced and fun. Do go here when in the Philipines.

What the DS says about Lantaca (Lantaka may be the correct spelling) is all true. It's sort of an old, colonial place facing the beach and the island of Basilan. The problem is that no one has spent any money on the place in years, and it desperately needs new paint and new furniture. The other problem is that, unless you arrive and register with a woman, you ain't getting one in.

There are three or four fast boats a day from the Zambo docks, right next to Lantaka to Basilan. The ride takes about 40 minutes and the boats are safe with airplane-type seats. You can even smoke if you want to sit on one of the wooden seats on the deck. Basilan has two cities: Isabella and Lamitan. Lamitan is the larger of the two, but there's nothing to do in either. It's risky in the extreme to stay there overnight and, at any rate, there are no accommodations that even border on the acceptable. However, it's a nice boat ride, and it costs very little to take the trip.

I'm hoping that DS and I can get over to Zambo together on his next trip here, but we will surely have to bring our own wine as the selection in the city is your basic "red" or "white" sir?
